Release id #161041 : Sam's Journey +D

Well, in quick testing with an reu-less NTSC machine, it seems to playtest just fine on the first few screens, save for a few small occasional screen scroll glitches that aren't a hinderence to gameplay. So, I'm wondering why the REU is needed for the NTSC machine, and what areas of the PAL version of the game are completely unplayable on NTSC?

That is perhaps a question for the game makers, and not the crackers? There is a different set of disks for the ntsc guys at least.

I wanted to buy the original and support the developers and the retro scene in general, but I saw that insane prize so I skipped.
Game of the decade or not, fantastic gameplay or not, do whatever you want with your money but no way I'm gonna spend as much as I spent for winter games in 1988 30yrs later... Assassin Creed would cost 5K EUR if comparing. feel free to disagree.

There are no downloads because:
Commercial game - support the developers!

Compared to most other games that are not ??

I guess piracy has left the scene =)

It's just a half-assed protection on CSDb's accountability. Those who want to support the game and get a nice collector's version with the box, the cartridge, the tidbits and the goodies, will buy the game. Whilst those who don't give a fuck, just want to check out game's look&feel first hand and then forget it for good, or think that the price is unreasonably high, will get the game from other sources anyway. I strongly doubt that a condescending remark instead of a download link will convince the latter ones to buy the game.

Can't agree more with ZeSmasher. I'd be more than willing/happy to give a few bucks for the legal digital copy of the game in a "pay as much you feel the stuff worths" purchase system.
But this way, I'll just pirate it, and I'm sure I'm not the only one who thinks the same.

I pre ordered the game right at the start. I didn't even get my download link so far. I got my down load "elsewhere". i played the game and was abit disappointed. i am no hardened gamer so I was stuck on the 2nd screen. I retried about 4 or 5 times and gave up. quite alot of money for so little entertainment.

I can understand both sides.

There´re so much new things for the 64 - no matter if soft- or hardware - like ever.

Let´s reward it.

You have to log in to Protovisions site to get the download link.

And of course they can take whatever price they want, they own the game, regardless of your views. And you guys can download it from the boards or get a link, or the files from someone. I think it's worth it. I bought the cartridge, as I am collecting these games. They spent a lot of time making this game, and what they make on it can never pay for what that time was worth. Go Protovision!

dont be silly.

as for the download link IMHO csdb should do two things: a) all and every entry must have a download link, no exceptions b) whipe all the firstrelease nonsense from csdb completely and add the entries only 6 months or so after release. all problems solved.

can you guys even imagine how much work there was creating the game? also creating the boxes, copying the disk and assembling the cartridges, putting labels on them and flashing each eeprom with a standard c64 takes a long time! also this is done by people who don't work for big companies with industrial equipment yet the quality of the product is comparable and it definitely has a way higher standard than the games from the past! if you are really interested in the game, then please buy it!

People who really like to have a collector's version will buy it, no matter if there is a crack available or not.

I have to agree with Groepaz on this subject. it's expensive for you - don't buy full version now or wait for itch.io or bargains later.
also have to agree on other subjects. I totally don't understand the first releases thing. and the no-download release page at CSDB is totally brain dead idea. Cant you guys wait few months - jeez.

And game itself? Just wow /o\

One thing I noticed in the game is that it does a ldy; lda; sta style colorscreen update, which could be argued to waste 4 cycles per char cell, compared to a straight scroll. Could possibly be interesting for NTSC-fixers to explore. Though likely trying to replace the scroll routine would lead to running out of memory, and the slowdown caused by just too many game objects would persist nevertheless.

But was also pleased to notice that there aren't any super-bad glitches on NTSC, and that the game doesn't intentionally refuse to run.

it also handles the gmod2 eeprom perfectly - ie its being used when its there and when its not, then the game just keeps working (without saving, of course). meaning it will run just fine as "ocean cartridge".

I don't play games on c64 since ages, the last one I remember I played was Brubaker because I cracked it and wanted to be sure it worked till the end. I'm also not a collector.
So there's really no interest for me to buy the game or get the pseudocracked version from whatever source. I just wanted to support the guys who still spend their time to develop quality games on c64 in 2017, soon 2018.
Now it's ok for me to spend 0-5 EUR for a budget game, 0-10 EUR on a good game, and 0-15 EUR for the masterpiece. But hey, we are talking about 45 EUR here for the digital version, +10 EUR +shipping costs for a cart/disk version. Doh, I can't tell you if your car is worth 10k, 50k or 100k, but I know the value of a videogame on steam, xbox, google play, etc. so that price is completely absurd for me.
@Grööpaz, this retarded here saved your Xmas from the usual childish introlinking talk: who was first, who has the longest dick, etc. so be thankful instead of complaining! :)

what saved my Xmas was the legit download, which i was playing before this "crack" even existed.

PS: i dont have a car. and i regard a lot of the crap i have seen on steam as completely worthless dung. each to his own.

Nah, I don't intend to buy it. I don't play games at all. I spend about 20€ on a drunk weekend, which is much more fun for me than a C64 game.

But based on some of the reactions here, I am quite certain that people who'd actually pay 20€ for it, might think that the digital copy costs 45€ as well. Only if the way to get hold of a digital copy wasn't so obscured...

There is also that they can't sell digital downloads from the Protovision shop to EU (except to Germany)

So probably easiest to just head to https://protovision.itch.io/

thanks for the link Groepaz. google addressed me here: https://www.protovision.games/shop/product_info.php?products_id..
19.99 is still a bit too high, but much more reasonable. of course it's my own point of view, license owner can sell it at 200.- if they want.

Personally, I never said it's expensive (I wouldn't even care if it would be sold for 5 times as much), only that I understand that some people who would like to buy it might find it expensive.
Still, I don't want to pay even 5€ for something I'd inspect for 15 minutes out of curiosity, and then forget forever. 1€? Well maybe, but that's still about a beer's worth - so I'd most likely hesitate.

why don't they sell to EU but rather Germany only? Is this kind of regulation or something?
I don't have problem buying on itch.io, just curious?
I'll buy physical package anyway.

The VAT differs from country to country, the European tax law for digital goods requires to handle them separately, and Protovision probably doesn't want to deal with that.

They do only accept orders from Germany? I'm puzzled, because JTR just mentioned issues with Paypal for German "but not international customers". Guess the confusing point is that they did not manage to keep the Protovision website in order. Those who are interested might contact them per mail ;)

the EU laws are very funky. they require online sales to calculate taxes according to each single EU country - which makes it quite a mess.

and yes, 20 euro wont even get you drunk for one evening here, let alone an entire evening :=) perhaps jb is drinking gasoline? (that would explain a few things =P)

According to the intarwebs, 20 EUR buy you about 3 litres of Düsseldorf Alt in a pub. I think that'd make me more than a bit tipsy. :)

Yeah well, I usually buy cheap, discount stuff. Paying more than that for alcohol is a waste of money if my main goal is a blackout, right?

You could get 40 0.5l Löwenbräus for that money here (Hungary). Or about 25-30 in a cheap pub. Kinda enough for a night. And Löwenbräu isn't even a too bad beer.

The pub where I'm regular sells Löwenbräu for 250 hungarian moneys (0.8€). That means, even with tipping the bartender, I could drink about 10 beers per night (a beer every half an hour makes up to 5 hours, that's not too much), if we count the weekend as two nights (Friday and Saturday). Now, 10 beers won't get me too drunk, but if I spend all the 20€ on one night and drink a bit faster, that's about 20 quick beers and a guaranteed knockout.
