sorry for the delay. beleive me it feels like trying to release a mega demo and a disk mag at the same time :)

the note text is about 66 K uncompressed.

Thanks for the extensive "note" (as you said, more like a diskmag! :D)
I've always found it fascinating to read about how others go about their demo-creation, the ideas and thought process that leads to a routine and the optimizations etc.
This really gives an insight in how much work has gone into the production.

what shadow said. some facts are not quite straight though, noname has done such a "2d trailblazer" already in obscene code (tho smaller and slower), the freedir tunnel in error 23 has 3 faked axes not 1 (and depth shading, and can change texture brightness, and is fullscreen:), Bubis' textured inner sphere (rushed orb) has also 3 axes and is fullscreeen with texture animation. :)

... I just read now I was mentioned, sorry guys for being such a picky bitching idiot O:-)

I didn't know about "obscene code" but I just checked it and (besides being half size) it has rotation in two axes only (check the horizon line, it is always horizontal). Maybe that's what you mean by "2d trailblazer"? In that case, I agree it would have been better if we mentioned it in the note file next to tower power, but at least this doesn't invalidate our world first claim to first 3 axes trailblazer :)

I did not look at the code of error 23 and orb rotator. I did mention cute overdose having 3 axis rotation. in error 23 I specifically used the word "seemed" to communicate that I wasn't sure. Sorry for not making that more explicit.

My impression in error 23 was that it used texture sliding in both directions, (one for forward movement in tunnel, and one for rotation around the movement axis since that tunnel is a perfect cylinder) plus one rotation transform in code. I didn't want to explicitly lay these out in the note file since i didn't have exact info (I am laying them out here since this is a forum and you or bubis can augment/correct this info). So I only mentioned minimal amount. I had no intention of taking anything away from those three effects (error 23, cute overdose, rushed orb). In fact I love them :)

Thanks again for all the feedback. Hopefully we'll get to meet you at X or some other party :)

Also everybody, feel free to point out any other inaccuracy / missing information in the note file. And we will gladly fix any errors.

I'm quite sure that Graham has made the "Planet" effect before (in 4x4), but i can't find the demo. I think it's a hidden part somewhere, so that makes it even harder to find :(. Is Graham there!? or anyone else?

i am trying to check dawnfall for hidden sphere part, but space + left arrow does not get me to any hidden parts??? maybe I am too tired or something!

hcl, could you be refering to the first part after intro in comalight 12, the one that starts with "king arthur gathered the knights around the round..."? the one that has mandelbrot over sphere in 4x4? if that is what you were refering to, i don't think that is a texture mapped rotating sphere. it seems more like the sphere is constant and the texture is moving in two directions over the surface, almost like the lens-moving-over-bitmap type of effect, but with lens being constant and the bitmap moving behind it. Also it gets some distortions later on.

There are also higher resolution versions of the comalight12 type spherical mapping. But none of the ones i have seen actually wrap a texture around a sphere with stable tex coords (such that the same texel stays on the same point on the sphere) and rotate in three axes. The closest i have seen was in the Miracles demo from LCP 09 that we mentioned in the note

Unless there is yet another hidden part one that I am not aware of :)

In vice+unix this translates to shift+'-'.

'Space' only work in the endpart (for another hidden/additional part).

yes this IS a 3 axisrotating texture mapped sphere.

Hidden part aaaargh.

I will fix this in the note soon. Snapshot Planet is definitely NOT world first. my apologies

However, it looks like mine is slightly faster (together with higher resolution), maybe i should call mine world record, instead of world first ;)

@enthusi: I meant I am plotting about the same no of pixels faster (graham's looks like 48 x 48 x ~3/4 in about 5 frames, mine is 32 x 64 x ~3/4 in less then 4 frames, with music and more fli interrupts).

As for flatness, I don't think either of them has perspective correction.

The note is excellent, definitely worth the effort! Any chance for the .txt version? I am struggling to read it with virtually no interline, I think the proportional font notes shall at least use 12-16px high line-spacing these days :)

@digger: sorry for the line spacing :) we sacrifice some of these details for a faster proportional text routine. In the long term we wish to rewamp our web site at some point and I can see this note being on that web site in html format.

FYI, necessary fixes have been made to the note file and the new version is uploaded. The world first claim has been removed from "Planet". Also comparisons have been removed from the "Tunnel" with Bubis's prior parts and "Rushed Orb" is also mentioned. And finally there are a few other minor fixes here and there.
