Custom Char paint program?
I wonder: Is there any program that allows you to load (or even edit) your own custom charset (and screen) and then colorize it? It should support hires, Multicolor (yes, also the hires in multicolor!) and ECM!
Back in the day i used Paintmagic because you had *some* control over what color maps to which bitpattern and you could easily colorize chars. But paintmagic neither allows working with charsets and obviously does not support hires!
I think some game graphics tools might do the job, but I don't really know what's easy to use!...
Any suggestions? |

I just went through some of my old disks yesterday, and found (among other things) this old tool I made way back when...
http://noname.c64.org/csdb/release/index.php?id=78317
It has at least some of the features you're looking for:
load/save/edit of custom character sets in hires or multicolor.
You can also create character sets with double width/height and the editor has a function for copying the rom character sets and stretching vertically + horizontally.
The editor is started by SYS25000 and there's even a norwegian version on the disk. It uses the character set at address $0800, so if you want to load a character set from another source, you'll have to load that manually. Hope it'll be of use to you! |

Well, gpz, i came here looking for a few NAMES of programs to try out! <:-)
I know there are such programs, i just haven't come across any (apart from the Katakis Devkit (was it Katakis? I think!))...
MapEddi2 looks promising, will try that, thx ninja! ;-)
Stein: This editor of yours doesn't appear to allow editing of whole screens, and the charmatrix seems to be fixed (ultrafont style)... Or am I just using it wrong? ;-) |

DeeKay: My editor doesn't do screen editing, it's just for editing simple fonts. And yes, the grid is fixed for each mode (1x1, 1x2, 2x1, 2x2). |

Okay, I did try out Mapeddi2 and it is not suitable unfortunately. Neither can i load my own charsets and screens, nor can I work on a 1x1 basis (every screen is structured in 2x2 blocks).
So the search is still on. Any other suggestions? 8) Gpz maybe? |

Hey Deekay.
Probably the tool OPM is suitable. A bit weird though, because it is somekind of Firefox-Addon, but therefore quiet handy...
Almighty God used it for his char-based pic Crepusculogirl (remember the Level 64 demo at the X08 party?).

CharPad V1.0 maybe? It has all features You want except ECM, and nice option to rip charsets from vice snapshot.
Yep, it's Windows program, but should work fine in WINE. |

Try this one.
Graphic Editor (J.Fox)
Never used anything else since 1987.
Map editor is also very easy to use. As far as I know every char can be colorized seperately ($d800 color ram that is ofcourse)
Also contains one the very best sprite editors.
I am not a good coder and an even worse graphician but I find this one very good.
(edited the post. Forgot to include the link. Must be an ageing problem :))
