High-score power ballad compo

A little thread to keep all releases gathered in one place.

Everyone can join. Just produce the mightiest power ballad high-score tune ever and upload it to the CSDB.

Released so far:

Anyone?

HIGHSCORE FRENZY!

Mja - deadline has to be at least over the weekend some time.
Sorry 'bout that, but SOMEONE left for the Gran Canaries, and SOMEONE has to watch both the kids, AND work, AND do sid.

Besides we need Dane and Drax, and that other Linus to get their shit together too.

-And Jeff. *but dont use that thing I heard on x though. heeh hee :)
nice boxers, BTW

and Geir - I'm sure you have some ideas you're just dying to project.
Carpe diem, dude

…and while we're at at Jeroen should do one too :) but don't use stuff lying around! :) more noo stuffz! \o/

@Sir Akesson: hm, the board kinda didn't think we'd allow that, but is it a HighScore-Power-Ballad™ -tune?

and everybody else whom I've forgotten… but now I have to prepare supper.

Later, Schmater

Yes, it is definitely a hi-score tune because it is the hi-score music from Hardsync. And my aim was to make a power ballad. Whether I succeeded is a matter for the board...

Clarification: The hi-score music is the initial part of that subtune. Then, it transitions into subtune 2 which is the menu music (and not a part of this competition).

Good idea, I'll try that.

It's here: High-score Power Ballad Competition 2012

lft: I think you will have to add an exclusiv release for the music. I can't add it to the Highscore-event as it was already added to the Y2012 event. Besides it kinda messes up the voting as votes for the game gets mixed up with votes for the music :)

Coool! Only problem I have is, that I love happy dance tunes more than high score ballads, with only one exception.. high score tune from Commando, covered by Ben Daglish. ;-) I appreciate the organisational style of this compo: 2 weeks span! That's the spirit. The worst thing about online compos is that many of them lasts for months... which is totally absurd.

You mean, only happy dance tunes accepted? ;-)) Naah. Anyway I was thinking about making it even more anonymous than before. Just having C64 recordings (MP3) during compo and voting phase, so noone will be able to guess the author from the player/editor used. Yes, most of the musicians have distinctive style, but this way it would be also easier for people to check the tunes anytime. E.g. listen to them in train.. o Ipod.. and Iphones.. and androids..

Kristian, C64.sk's SID compos were completely free style (plain sid 3 channels, any length, any speed, original composition (no covers)). All compo results are here at CSDB, or you can check how it looks when searching for sid compo at c64.sk: http://www.c64.sk/?content=news&searchstring=sidcompo

I like your idea of genre-based compo. Maybe you could make more of them during the next year.

Personally I'm totally fine with CSDb votes. But you have to consider that different 'amount' of voters maybe a problem to get somehow 'objective' results for the compo. That 'average vote' algo is kinda tricky :-)

I say YES do it, all tunes in the C64.sk The SID Compo with .mp3 recordings, easy to do with Sidplay2/w maybe on Linux too? But it should be plain C64 SID recordings as mp3 and not a mp3 mastered SID tune with a PC, not that someone put all kind of filters to the SID tune. xD

I wouldn't use CSDB's voting system in a month of sundays because:

a) it's weighted averaging system admittedly doesn't work properly unless MANY votes are cast.

b) its blatantly open to "name voting"

c) you are ignoring a larger c64 audience out there because they are not allowed to become members on here because they aren't "sceners" and therefore apparently don't count and therefore can't vote.

indeed. just like any other statistical system gives only vague results if the number of samples is low. that is how you make 2nd place in a democompo when atleast 3 other demos deserved better =)

So as this compo ends now (at least that's what the csdb time says) I've got to say: great compo-idea!
Was really fun; lots of amazing tunes.

As 'friend of the underdogs' I'd like to share what my personal favs were. Yeah, I know the 'big ones' like 6R6, Dane and Linus can not go wrong anytime. I voted 9 or 10 for all the 'big names' anyway, because I can't deny that they just deliver superb stuff.

But when I look at the tunes I really listened most of the time over and over again then it's like this:

1. Fredrik - Highscore tune 2

Just love those simple poprock chords; don't care for fancy instruments when I hear melodies so lovely. Just love all the toms and that hi-hat snare rythm and that simple melody.

2. Flex - Game Over

I thought this would be my personal No.1 for a long time. Gives me that 'early 90s' feeling that I had when I was a kid. Flex surprised me already this year at X with his tune. His was also my personal favorite from that party. Perhaps he just hits a nerve (for me).

3. Cadaver - Vicory against Tacgnol

I must admit I like guitar based music (rock/metal) anyway. This tune wasn't a real rock-tune, but as always: perfect 'state of the art'. Cadaver has the ability to just do 'standard'-things - but this is to me exactly what I want to hear. All his tunes are great (in my ears) and so is this one.

So 'votes' and 'competition winners' are one thing, but I'd love to read what your personal favorites are/were and why.

I'll take you up on that offer, Spider. Mostly because I don't agree on the voting system here (seriously, Scarlet is a 3?) but also because I know how much I appreciate getting feedback on what I've done so I suppose that might be the case for fellow musicians.

Picking a top 3 for tough work, but here you go:

1. Vers de Nouvelles Aventures / Franz Koopa
My favourite out of the tunes that entered the competition. I wish I had composed this myself. Tells a story of happiness and sadness without having to resort to gimmicks to keep me listening. I wouldn't change a single thing.

2. High-score ballad / Kristian
Start writing lyrics and call Morten Harket today. With this you have a shot at doing something about Norway's lousy track record in the Eurovision song contest! No seriously, outstanding tune. I especially like it when the chorus is repeated but raised one octave. It's a cheap trick but those are often the best ones. For this to be my top pick, however, I would have wanted some more action in the arpeggio channel.

3. Sidviken Highscore / Stinsen
A happy tune which allows for some very easy listening. It definitely has TV-theme quailties, and for me that's a good thing since it means accessibility and musicality. My only gripe with the tune is that the instruments sound a bit rough, or at least rougher than I would have liked them.

Great idea!

I haven't voted on csdb (will do on all tunes once the compo is over), but definately some mentions I would love to do for one or other reason..

Noise reduction headset on.. lets go:

Quick Score Ballad / Spider Jerusalem
Scores a plus from me because of the opening, not many of the tunes gave me the feeling a game just ended. Love the cheesy tune as well :)

I sail at midnight / Linus
As far of the compo i found "I don't want your money baby" (which I will play full volume speeding on the highway btw!), sailing at midnight scores a plus for me for being non-cheesy and yet still fitting the compo!

Your best effort / Radiantx
Scores a big plus for fitting the "power ballad", I just wish it was just a little bit more cheesier

Hiscoretunage / Zerozillion
Big plus for being the most depressing tune.. yeah great, I get a high score but the damn end-boss killed me and now I will need 6 hours to get there again to even attempt to get further.. I can let this tune loop for 30 mins and get out of bath utterly depressed.. awesome emotion :)

Sidviken / Stinsen
Big plus for being on my mind for several days now reminding me of a mixture of 2 or 3 other sids, by other authors whilst not being the same.. also makes my want to hold up a scarf and wave it along :)

High-Score 2020 by Xiny6581
Big plus for putting a HUGE smile on my face.. this tune is so inviting to re-play a game, to total oposite of Zerozillion's tune and thus also hitting an emotional button I love :)

Highscore tune 2 by Fredrik
Big plus for the toms, but an even bigger plus for the awesome beatles feeling (especially the melody blending around 1:10).. reminds me of TDM's style (for example Elanor Rigby, but this was a direct cover)

Hardsync by Lft
A big plus for overpooring the intro with such incredible cheese, i love it :)

What I always liked most about the voting was comments why people like particular tunes and that. Brings different points of view and angles... helps one relisten more carefuly and discover other nuances in the tunes, that he could have missed.

;-) you mean ordering from from your most favorite to least favorite? if the orgas will ask me, I can send them XLS with columns to be filled (name of the tune and such) and after import to database we can start the voting. results are calculated on fly (select from database, count votes, order tunes) problem with release of results lies in additional ideas I have.. like jury votes and such that usually give me some overhead work that slows down the release. with this compo such things won't slow down anything, so immediately after the voting stops, the results can be set visible..

Personally I see no reason to do anything particularly complicated. I mean.. even though there is some weighting and stuff in the CSDb voting, we already got a lot of votes here (no need to vote again -- I wouldn't like to go through all the tunes once again for sure!) and a whole bunch of comments as well. Why not simply set a deadline and base the results on the CSDb vote scores at that date/time?

(and the weighting is perhaps not actually a bad thing either, even though I am unsure exactly what it does to the scores.)

Can't see that the results would be any more or less fair with some other kind of voting system than the one which has already been used by people?

(I just tried cut/pasting the table of entries from the compo page at CSDb straight into an excel sheet and sorting it on basis of the CSDb scores. Took me literally less than a minute to generate a nicely sorted list of entries on basis of score.)

I would appreciate 2 features.
Simple javascript sorter of table here at csdb. (that's quite easy to implement with jquery and some "sort-table" plugin)

other thing.. it's kinda tiresome to browse through all entries for a single compo to read comments. it would be nice to have some sort of.. "click here to read comments" (will open in sort of thickbox popup).

Yeah - I agree with all these last statements

so ill just set a voting deadline then - like originally planned.

One thing though -I agree there's a s%@^load of tunes to go through - but the more complex tunes, I've been through several times in order to be able to "get them" at all

so if everybody just listens to each tune once, it's kinda like Eurovision…

in a manner of Stellan, i'll put my top 3 up.

1. Close, but no cigar (c) Hein
humming it daily since it got released. no contest, really. from the draxish, pseudo-reverberated lead, through all those cool chord changes (_all_ chord changes, indeed), to the simple but so effective arrangement... flawless. and the chorus is killing me way beyond any explanation.

2. I sail at midnight (c) Linus
of course - it sounds so powerful you have no choice but obey. that Canterbury progrock comment of the author tickled me nicely too. even though i don't know shit about Canterbury scene except Soft Machine and Robert Wyatt ;)

3. Higher scores (c) Frantic
well, i'm rather ignorant in the serial domain, but this reminds me of Webern's piano variations somehow. this or not, here i can spot lots of inspiring solutions i haven't heard frequently in my entire life, and that is always welcome. Psycho likes it too! \o/

Speaking of ranking the tunes...
Why not just take all the voting data into an excel sheet, skip the weighting and add a few decimals? The rounding of numbers here on CSDB makes several tunes end up on the same score while in reality none of the tunes has got the same score.

I did it just now to see what it would look like, and after sorting the results I can see that the tune on first place has got an average of 8,555555556 while the tune on tenth place has got an average of 8,266666667. There are 0,008385744 points seperating number one and number two :)

excellent compo, the amount of good entries is staggering ;)

so yea, I just voted for my top 5 and I'm tired now lol. 0-10 scale is a bit weird with 30+ entries. anyway, here goes...

my top 5

#1 hein - close, but no cigar 10/10 (simply my favorite, best melody, best hiscore-feel and catchyness, best title too)

#2 linus - i sail at midnight 10/10 (superb single speed sounds, melody at 01:00 does it for me, wish it was longer)

#3 psycho8580 - staring at the ceiling 9/10 (my fav till more and more tunes showed up, love the uncertainty in it)

#4 zerozillion - hiscoretunage 9/10 (if only it was longer, awesome sound)

#5 stein - short... is short 8/10 (I think the *excellent* melody is wasted on this short tune, you must make an extended version)

I see a lot of people are calling this and that tune too short - which I don't really get.
Why should a highscore tune, or any tune for that matter, be "3 radio minutes?"

just listen to it again :) some tunes are what they are, and will only get watered out by adding 2 more verses and a bridge in order to make it longer.

Personally, I think some of these high score tunes repeat themselves, and would gain by being slightly shorter.

cause none of these hiscore tunes are used in actual hiscores, but as entries for a music compo for everybody to listen to. so yea, then I want to hear more ;)
