WinVice & Windows 10 error
OK. I've dealt with this for a week or two and it's time to see if a solution is available.
WinVice 2.4 (win64 x64 mingw)
Anytime I double click a .d64, I get this error:
VICE Error!
Cannot startup logging system.
I hit enter (or click OK) and that is that. I haven't had any issues with Vice, just this silly error.
Any way to fix this? I can deal with hitting enter, but would rather Vice just boot up without my having to do so. |

After you tried a nightly build? Grab the latest here -> http://vice.pokefinder.org/
Your problem might be fixed already considering VICE 2.4 is four years old now - released in late 2012. (pre-Windows 10) |

I haven't checked for the latest stable version, thought 2.4 was the last. Laziness I guess. Doesn't happen with 2.4.11, so for sure it's the version I use. I could deal with it, but meh, I'll go find the latest build.

Just downloaded WinVice 3 to check if this bug is gone, but nah, it still exists. After a bit of googling, the amount of helpful informations I could gather considering this slight annoyance is close to zero.
Oh and by the way, can't save settings neither.
+ a special bonus bug: if I'm dragging a .prg to Vice's window, it says it can't autostart specified file.
Windows 7 here, btw.

Try putting it somewhere other than Program Files, the folder has special permissions to stop virues/malware etc. |

Well I would gladly report them, only if the project wasn't using that malware-ridden SourceForge ordeal.

I know people who unwillingly installed shit on their computers thanks to SF and their petty adware injections into hosted projects. This isn't just a hearsay, they openly admitted being malicious.
Granted, it's mostly the users' fault for not being cautious enough and clicking the next button blindly, but apart of those fishy ads all over the place that looked like download buttons, the site was somewhat reputable till then, so there was no reason to be overly suspicious.
All that crap started about 2013. For a while they were even straight up hosting a malware version of FileZilla, one of the most popular FTP clients out there.
I am aware that they replaced the management and now trying to act much more transparent, but as for me, it will take a long time till they regain my trust. I avoid the site lite plague and try to find alternative download options in case a default Google search directs me there. |

Ah I see, so avoiding sites broadly known for exploiting their users is facepalm material now? My bad, it seems I didn't got the memo *sigh*
Anyhow, since WinVice works fine from non-system partitions, I guess it's not even a bug, but rather something related to Windows' UAC settings? |

Well, I don't have the extra time nor the energy to clean shit smeared all over my computer, so for some reason (unusual, I know) I prefer it to stay ad- and malwareless, what the fuck this has to do with the US and slavery? :D I don't visit sites which have/had bad rep till they don't prove their trustability, as simple as that.

Use the nightly builds which don't come from Sourceforge if you don't like it.
By the way Sourceforge was sold back in January and with that there were a few changes. The experimental installer "improvements" were stopped for good. |

Yeah and apparently now they do malware scan on all the hosted stuff too, but my approach is always "better safe than sorry". I am really afraid to lose or compromise important/confidential client data. Yep I understand that may seem paranoid, but it could easily affect my life quite negatively. |

SF has indeed improved a lot since new management took over. All the ads are still annoying, but there seem to be browser plugins for that.
Switching to GitHub won't help either, since it looks like GitHub is having severe financial difficulties, so I expect some 'installers' appearing on GitHub before long.
And the nightlies sort of come from SF, at least the source ;) |

Yes, I'm interested as well as I've heard exactly the opposite. AFAIK, GitHub was always cash-flow positive, and still is. There were some internal struggles due to corporate politics, but that didn't affected their profit. |

Thanks for that article.
It appears GitHub is doing much better than the Bloomberg article implies. I use GitHub myself for some small tools and code examples for some Codebase64 articles, but those are easily moved should shit hit the fan.
The private repositories of BitBucket sound interesting, gives me a place to host some projects before they're ready for public access. |

When I go to SID settings, I get the following error message in Windows 7
"An unexpected error occurred. Received signal 11 ()"
and Vice exits.
The log file shows:
Cannot open winio32.dll, trying direct PCI I/O access.
Cannot use direct PCI I/O access on Windows NT/2000/Server/XP/Vista/7/8/10.

Can't produce this. When I select SID settings, nothing weird happens and I can quit VICE gracefully:

Necro-posting to this old thread if someone finds it on google (like I did).
I just started to get the "Cannot startup logging system" in Win10. It turns out I had a faulty entry in the setting for LogFileName, pointing to a folder/file that did not exist. Simply removing this line from vice.ini (which is stored in %appdata%\vice\3.1\vice.ini) did the trick for me. Maybe it can help someone that stumbles upon this. |

For VICE 3.3+ the vice config dir is in %appdata%/vice, we removed the "$major.$minor" subdir. So on my box it's C:\users\comp*x\appdata\roaming\vice.
The 'roaming' bit is currently hardcoded, if someone can explain why it's sometimes 'roaming' and sometimes 'local', or even 'LocalLow', our Windows maintainer would be much obliged :) |

Use SHGetFolderPath with CSIDL_APPDATA instead of hardcoding the path within the profile directory. Or even SHGetKnownFolderPath if supporting XP is not a concern. |

In relation to error: lib_stralloc(NULL) not allowed
Some of the recent issues with Windows 10 can be because of winpcap being installed and not detecting network interfaces. The same can be witnessed in Wireshark. Uninstall winpcap and use npcap instead. Alternatively a vice build without ethernet |

I had some suspicions the lib_stralloc(NULL) might be coming from a failure to enumerate network adapters via winpcap.
Of course on my box any Windows update doesn't trigger any pcap errors or UAC prompts, so it's a little hard to debug on my end. |

I recently done a test in a fresh VM of Windows 10, 1809 as a standard users and r35878 seemed to work fine. No need to start as admin or any UAC issues. |

Nice, and I assume this was with npcap, disabling the tick mark in the installer for 'require admin' and enabling the tick mark for 'wpcap API compatibility'?
That worked for me at least.
If so, we need to update our docs to tell people to use npcap and not wpcap. |

no npcap or wincap installed. I guess the VM exposes the NICs a little differently.
In a 2nd native install on a system with Realtek with Windows 10, 1809 it ran fine - no need for admin.
The 1st native install was on a system with Intel NIC using 23.5 Intel ProSet drivers using the new Windows 10 driver model. |
