"and could overtake Commodore 64"

Full quote: "Raspberry Pi sales hit 11 million - and could overtake Commodore 64", from here: http://www.belfasttelegraph.co.uk/business/news/raspberry-pi-sa..

Now, this is for all 10 or so variants of Raspberry Pi combined.

C-64 sales estimations range anywhere between 10M and 30M units sold.

But even when comparing against the lower bound, the C-64 was pretty much unchanged throughout its era, except for minor details. Claims like, "[...] we get past the Commodore 64, that is in third place after the PC and the Mac. (We could) be the third-most popular computer architecture in history." are slightly dubious, as "Raspberry Pi" is rather a brand name than an actual computer architecture, in my book, not to mention the general apples vs. oranges quality of such statements.

Discuss! :)

from another perspective we should be proud that they remember and are proud to "overtake" c64 sales :)

Only the c64 has a soul, so the others don't matter.

Very good and valid point :)

C64 always had 64kb of RAM through its entire production lifetime, while RPi already had x2 RAM upgrade - the sign of times.

It is like with VW Beetle - minor changes during production but the base concept remained unchanged for a number of decades. Didn't check recently but probably all VW Golf models manufactured up to this date overtook those 20+ million of Beetle cars but it can not be compared.

On the other hand RPi average lifetime in current times and market is something exceptional. You change mobiles and notebooks quicker than RPi based systems.

A few arguments from the real world:
- these very rough data 10-30 mio C64 sold remain vague and don't seem to get any more accurate from mere repetition over decades
- it's also not clear, which models count into these 10-30 mio figure, but I guess C64C (aka C64II), C64G (maybe even C128) are also counted, so the point "for all 10 or so variants of Raspberry Pi combined" seems pointless ;)

Anyway, it's comparing apples with pears, as a German saying says ;)

Cheers

It is indeed a very bad comparison as this is a homecomputer...

and this is not...

if you want to go for the bad comparison route, its rather that c64 was a 2nd wave pioneer which paved the way for homecomputers thus that 10-30 million was a much bigger achievement, in a world almost not penetrated with computers.

today one iphone model sells much more than that, the market is totally differeint.

Then add the number of Rasberry Pis running VICE or RetriPi with some form of C64 emulator and watch the C64 steam past.

I think the C64 sales probably only include the breadbin + C. They might also have the SX-64 and GS included but I wouldn't be suprised if they didn't. I would 100% bet they don't have 128 sales in it, which gives us another 5 million or so. I think we also need to include the DTV, not sure how many of those were made. The Wii has an official C64 emulator and games, another 100million then ?

Wise words. Agreed. :)

So? Accuracy is not so much a problem here (RasPi figures are in the same ballpark) - the big range, another thing. Hence lower bound.

All C-64 models (including SX and GS) are basically the same hardware in different shells. So, not pointless. :) (And including SX/GS or not probably wouldn't make much of a difference, and C128 was probably not included.)

I said as much already. :)
