For the love of god... You guys seriously didn't know this?
The "classic" way of learning to paint in the academies was to make copies of works from the old masters. In some places (Italy, f.ex) this way of learning is still practiced. The camera obscura was a great way to add correct perspective and to pin down a composition without fighting for hours with it. This is not the point though. The point is the choices you as an artist make in your interpretation of the original image; your gaze, what you see and how it affects your version of the image and which concept and context you add to it.
Once more: 80% of all the brilliant portraits and landscapes from the 1800's are made from photos due to the simple fact that photos 1) doesn't need a lunch-break and 2) doesn't get paid by the hour. |

Did you see what these artists did with it?
And what the average demoscene pixeler does with a Boris?
Comparing these artists to some poor (Boris) copies is a disgrace, seriously. |

Quoting Pablo Picasso
Bad artists copy. Good artists steal.

Well, i might have been to jumpy :)
But, posting it here on csdb kinda serves a context.. Especially seeing you participate in the comment-discussions on some pixel graphics, I didn't consider that bridge too far fetched. |
