color range in char control

I am creating some graphics these times and want to know if there are any tools out there to load an image and set the colors per char in the bitmap so that let us say light red is always color 2 in the char and so on. I had such a tool in the past on the c64... are there any good ones today on pc or c64? I want to load up a koala image and set colors on each char fast!

Paintmagic does this doesn't it?

i seem to remember (vaguely) doing an (unused) side panel for goldrunner in paintmagic.

paintmagic lets you do that .... somewhat. it however uses one value for the entire colorram, so for actually colorful graphics its not very useful :) i am not sure if you can alter the color asignments of an existing image either, i think you can only select and then draw (so changing it afterwards would basically mean drawing over the entire picture again)

I have a simple working C code written for that purpose
(HiRes).
It exchanges i.e. all #$01 color-ram bytes with #$10 and inverses the according bitmap.
This is for example required when you save hires from GIMP which choses BG/FG color by occurance for each block.
So even black-white images have different FGs.

I'm looking for an interactive tool, as I need different colors in various parts of the image.

It takes like one day to code a rudimentary tool in your favorite language using your favorite toolkit. :P Be a coder!

It takes about 3 hours to code, and about an hour to test and release... :)

HiColEdit release 1
