multispeed

Hello everybody,

Just to be sure: Multispeed means that the SID is updated with new parameters not once per frame/tick but multiple times per frame/tick, right? And this clearly affects the sound? What songs would be good examples of the multispeed-effect? Is "ACE 2" by Rob Hubbard multispeed?

Thanks in advance for any answers!

@Steppe: Well, Walt/Bonzai thought that too, I caught him looking for samples in it at some "The Party" party years back
:-)

@Oswald: thanks... still a bit unfinished, like a lot of my tunes from back then :-)

@Steppe: Whee, didn't know the Taki tune before. That drumset is amazing indeed.

@Jeff: That mostly also happens with the Deus Ex Machina soundtrack, by the way. Heard them say things like "Come on, that's not C64 music anymore. Wonder how they squeeze such an amount of samples into 64K." Hehehe... :D

<self-centered-post>
when i played out, i did later on get reviewed as 'playing c64 sounds in addition to beats'
</self-centered-post>

i wonder if people mistaking the xspeed-sounds with samples is a good thing.

+ hats off to jeff, grg and linus, they're unbeaten when it comes to the creation of nicely programmed multispeed-sounds.

Well, beside of sophisticated drums and faster slides, what sort of further improvements in sound-quality can be achieved within multispeed tunes?

What sound-FX can only be done with multispeed and do those SID-FX probably have names like their VIC-siblings ;-) I guess that filter, ring-mod or vibratos could be used quite efficiently in multispeed tunes, not only for speech-synth.

And then there are some tunes which people tend to think that they are multi-speed tunes, eventhough they are just single-speed tunes. ;-)

C64Music/VARIOUS/S-Z/Wisdom/7D2_Funk.sid

<warning: awfully false notes behind />

Makes more sense when played on a real C64 with 8580 though.

Thanks again everybody! The examples were great, I think I now "got it" - very cool drums, and slides with, in a way, better resolution. Of course if there's anything else to it, I too would love to know! (hmm, of course multispeed propably affects most stuff at least a bit)

@Turtle:
You can use multispeed for dirty synth sounds, smooth pulse-sounds (maily for leads, strings, pads, etc).
And well... I guess it can be used for many other neat things
;-)

You can use it for making chunky fullscreen plasmas bearable.

Quote: Fine with me Jeff, no need to argue your expertise in multispeed composing. 8th Frame is still awesome, everytime I play that to people who are not into it they say something like "bah, digi samples!" :-)

Another good example of multispeed is /VARIOUS/S-Z/Taki/Impulse.sid (16x)
This drumset is simply amazing!

(Sorry to revive an old thread but I'm just getting caught up.)

That is an amazing drum set!! But at 16x, it better be, since you're using more CPU time than it would take to just play short digi samples a la Digi-Organizer :)
