Which modern SID musicians favour the 6581 over the 8580?

I've only got an old breadbin with the 6581 at the moment, and it seems whenever I find a great new track it sounds shitty on my SID because it was made for the new one instead... :(

There must be some peeps still pushing the 6581, surely! But who are they?

When I bought my old C64 I was under the impression that the old SID was favoured - for example, the sampled speech in Greenrunner and Redrunner by Alexi Eeben sound really muffled (to me) on the 8580... Was I mistaken?

Any suggestions for 6581 tracks to check would be appreciated!

Thanks, J/HS

Though I can neither speak for him nor tell whether he really *prefers* 6581, Slimex seems to be worth mentioning here imho, since he at least is an active composer who DOES tunes for 6581 - which I really appreciate!

i favor the 6581, because its what i got born with.

also it has the warmest sound, where the 8580 seems cold and plastic.

also, the 6581 can do saturation and warm distortion in the filter, which 8580 fails on.

grew up with 8580, stuck with it. But I kinda love to get corrected when listening to some old SID tunes I got used to listening on new sid and then later realised what's their propper filtered version. Some hits by JT and Red Devil that I considered awesome ... sound more appropriate and less "bass screamy" on old sid.

Quote: Evolver comes to mind, speaking of Jeff.

I don't know why, but I think Evolver sounds just as good on 8580. I played it on my C64C+8580R5 recently, and it sounds great!

I've done 6581 sids a couple of times, but I've always preferred 8580 because of my innocent upbringing on it.

the saga continues \o/
why a majority of 'new school' sidsmiths choose 8580?
myself, i can't use 6581 properly. i can't stand the thought of having three filters and being unable to switch them smoothly. i consider the 6581 distortion a nice 'bug that became a feature' though, and i do miss it on 8580.
i've heard that 8580 is emulated a bit better than 6581 nowadays, which may play a role as well ;)

Perhaps at the next party gathering we can have a tug-of-war fun compo with active musicians... 8580's vs 6581's :) Why? Well, it's a known fact that most of the 6581's are old fogies! >;D
