Yeah, the explanation sucks :-)

The thing is that my sampler samples in true 8 bit, but for playing through $D418 you can only use 4 bits. So all I did was to simply combine 2x4 bits in 1 byte.
What it says on the screen looks more complex than it actually is and saying that the sound is different is just untrue.
My bad... but I was young, then ;-)

I don't get it. Two samples per byte somehow sounds worse than one sample per byte? Only if the player is braindead I guess :)
