I became interested in the Commodore 64 initially (as I am sure many did) through visits to friends' houses in the early 80's, probably initially when I was only 9 or 10 years old. My friend Dave let me create my own character disk for Ultima IV around 1985 or so. I was obsessed...that game almost became a religion for me. Naturally we played a lot of other games, and even before that year, we had seen his 64 through the data casette (tape) years. I remember wondering if the tape version of Ghostbusters would ever load. I recall the minimal CBM text intros of those early years, and eventually seeing my first ESI intros. I yearned to be a part of this intellectually endowed rebellion that I knew was going on behind the scenes...the illegality of it was intriguing, but it beckoned rather than threatened. The notion that something I did using my mind and a computer could anger authority figures seemed a positive one...and even as an adult, nothing has changed in that area.
