Thank you Raistlin for making this compo. As everybody else said - this was so much fun. In these lock down times, it is nice to have something good to focus on.
I think you complete nutters with putting up a Mega65 for grabs, but it just shows your dedication and I totally love it. You are the impersonation of everything I love about the scene. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you.

At ~11pm CET I'll be totalling up the votes in the compo. I won't tell you the exact time - to avoid anyone holding out their votes like they think it's an eBay swiping contest or something ;-)

So... please get your votes in! And please try to rate as many releases as you can - the more votes, the fairer the result should be (hopefully).

Wacek: I'd have to disagree on this one. Having a group logo, or having the border flash during a depack, or showing a brief "proudly presents" effectless logo, etc, is totally fine.

User Comment
Submitted by wacek on 16 January 2021
Having a completely different logo on black screen before the main effect (where the logo is not present) is a second screen, or am I again missing something here?

What a cool compo you have created Raistlin. Very sad that there are these discussions... The compo prize of a Mega65 is insanely cool and so generously, I can only think how much fun and excitement you had when you made this all to be. Hope it will continue without any upsets.

"2 compos.. 2 prizes (game compo to get either a Mega65 or 999Euro - my choice which as I would prefer it to be the former if it is still possible to order an M65)."

I have no stakes in this compo, but tbh, this material prize has put me off right from the start.
Demoscene in my book has made it a point more often than not to be non-commercial, and the prizes, if actually tangible, were mostly things to put in a glass box or of no more monetary value than the trip to a party and back plus entry fee.

That said, i think the actual prize is not the point in this discussion. :)

TL:DR.. 2 compos.. 2 prizes (game compo to get either a Mega65 or 999Euro - my choice which as I would prefer it to be the former if it is still possible to order an M65).

Here’s, then, what I propose. Because I am genuinely sorry to have messed up this compo so much in a single day.

Keep the rules as they are in my latest update... but... split the compo, as suggested, into two.

Demo/Intro Compo: as it was .. winner gets a Mega65

Game Compo: here I will try to source a second Mega65. If I can’t, I will offer a cash prize of 999Euro instead (I’d prefer to give the Mega65 - as I’d like to support the hopeful eventual commercial release of that system in some way).

I know people will think I’m crazy. Please don’t. I love the scene and I’m in a position where I can afford to do this. To the person that offered over PM to do this - thanks. Very very generous offer. But I’m happy to do this. My mess, my cleanup.

A couple of requests for doing this though:-

Triad’s entry should be reinstated .. and anyone else who might’ve removed their entries while I write this ;-)

No bad blood between us

And next time ... I will consult with people first and make sure the rules are 100% solid before commencement. I wasn’t happy with others’ compos being loose on the rules - and now mine suffered the same fate. Sorry about that.

Submitted by taper on 6 January 2021
Pulling out when conditions change amidst a running competition is not crazy, regardless of current ranking. Rather it is a matter of principles and taking the consequences of what you believe is right, whatever the 'cost' might be in material terms.

User Comment
Submitted by Shine on 6 January 2021
There is only one rule to change rules after compo starting:
"ALL" attendees / participants must be accept the changes.

User Comment
Submitted by F7sus4 on 6 January 2021
I understand the frustration involved, however, the amount of elements removed/exchanged to classify it as separate screen remains somewhat arbitrary.

User Comment
Submitted by TDM on 6 January 2021
Would probably have been easier if BD's entry was simply regarded as non-compliant, instead of rewriting the rules. Probably less people pissed too. It's a great entry, but if you have to alter the rules to fit it, something's wrong.

User Comment
Submitted by Raistlin on 6 January 2021
1) I did say that games were allowed.. so there’s no confusion there;

2) pulling out when you’re at #2 is crazy. It could easily make any surprise announcement on Results Day more annoying for some ;-)

User Comment
Submitted by Peacemaker on 6 January 2021

Aren't you overreacting a bit? The original rules were reinstated.

User Comment
Submitted by Powerslave on 6 January 2021
Since we feel the intent of the original rules have been altered close to deadline, our contribution will be retracted from the competition. New conditions not known at the start of the compo makes the playfield uneven and participation rather pointless, at least for us who handed in contributions before the new interpretation was presented today.

In summary, then, the present rules should be:-

*** Only Sprites Competition ***

Competition Rules:

* You can ONLY display sprites - no chars or bitmaps. Magic byte(s) CAN be used.
* Change any VIC properties that you like
* The Main Effect must be a one-screener
* The release should be in one PRG (preferably compressed) (no disk streaming)
* Interaction is allowed - make it a game if you like (including title, game, scores, instructions)
* Music is allowed and encouraged
* Borders can of course be removed

Winner will be chosen based on CSDB votes on 21st January using a squared average:-

((#10votes ^ 2) * 10 + (#9votes ^ 2) * 9 + ... (#1 votes ^ 2) * 1) / (#allvotes ^ 2)

.. I shall now retreat back to my Hedge of Disgrace to hide until the compo is over.

User Comment
Submitted by Raistlin on 6 January 2021
@ChristopherJam .. next time I think that could make sense. Sadly, as this one has a prize, of which I only have one to give, I can't do that.. plus it wouldn't be much of a compo with only one (so far) game entry.

This rule did kinda make it clear that games like this were ok though:-

"Interaction is allowed - make it a game if you like ;-p"

I mean, if we're allowing games, what is an "effect" if it isn't the entirety of the game in itself..? With a shooter, could we only allow one type of laser for example? Would a "nuke" be considered a different effect? To me, "Space Invaders" can be considered "the effect" in this sense - but I should definitely have written that clearly in the rules ...

User Comment
Submitted by ChristopherJam on 6 January 2021
Just add a games category, seperate to the single page demo category. Done and dusted :D

User Comment
Submitted by Raistlin on 6 January 2021
I can see both sides' argument on this. So ...

I'd like to change the rule back to that this compo should be for -only- single part entries. One PRG, one "effect". ie. IGNORE MY PREVIOUS MESSAGE.

On Booze's Sprite Invaders ... this is complicated. My original intent was that both demos AND games could be submitted - and I made that clear in marketing the compo. But games do need title screens usually of course - I don't want to limit the quality of a game by saying that it can't have a title screen.

Technically, with Sprite Invaders, we could consider that the "effect" here is a reproduction of Space Invaders. I know it's "gray", and I understand both sides' arguments, but I think that makes sense.

So...

We go back to the original rules...

One effect in one PRG.. with variations of that effect allowed...

And games such as this one should also be allowed - so long as they're not linking multiple games or mixing demo parts and game etc etc then it can be considered "an effect" IMO.

I'm really, really sorry for the upset caused.

User Comment
Submitted by wacek on 6 January 2021
Sorry Mirage, you know I have utmost respect for you and whole Booze, but that's just pure bullshit.
You have two screens. Title screen and game screen.
Entries with scrollers have one screen. The main screen.
Trying to prove that scrolling is "different screen every frame" and having two different views on the screen "is one screen because I start irq at the same time" is really... I mean, is anyone buying that? Because if so, I have an Empire State Building for sale for those people.

User Comment
Submitted by Mirage on 6 January 2021
I suppose the term 'one-screener' is open to debate. Technically, my game is a one-screener. It's the same irq running, constantly, with the same entry point after every v-blank.
All I'm doing when switching from menu to game is move some sprites, change their appearance and run some different code. There's no depacking or moving code around or anything.
One could argue that e.g. a sprite scroller is also not a one-screener, because you're moving sprites around and changing their appearance and branching of code would also not be allowed, because that means running different code every frame.

User Comment
Submitted by Mixer on 6 January 2021
Seems that breaking rules is just fine this time :)

User Comment
Submitted by wacek on 6 January 2021
Of course it's not fair to change the rules now.
The compo was for one screeners.
What do you expect me to do now? Add another screen to my entry? Are you fucking joking??

It's pretty fucking LAME to adjust rules to a single entry just because it's Booze entry. It's a splendid entry, violates the rules - tough luck. They knew the rules when they started to create it. This is ridiculous move and so much NOT in the spirit of demoscene.

Also, why don't you change other rules? How about only counting public votes, since the amount of anonymous voting happening in this compo is fucking heartbreaking?
How can my group with 3 active members have fair chance against groups of 40+ members, all doing cowardly TACTICAL voting behind the scenes? Talk about being fair?

It's really fucking probably last CSDb compo I want to participate in. It's so damn demotivating it's not even fucking funny.

User Comment
Submitted by Trap on 6 January 2021
I think it's great. If this was done 2 days before deadline, then yes - very bad. However, there is plenty of time for people to change or improve their entries if they so desire.
The change in rules - which is really minimal IMO - only gives us even better chance of good stuff coming out. Besides, it's Raistlin's call to make. His compo. His rules.

If the rules are not changed - Booze's game would have to disqualified just to name one example. Is that fair?

User Comment
Submitted by Nith on 6 January 2021
Changing the rules mid-compo is a bit lame, really

User Comment
Submitted by Raistlin on 6 January 2021
I would like to change one part of the rules for the compo. I realise that, at this late stage, that might be problematic... but without, several entries would be disqualified - and that doesn’t feel like my original intent. Especially considering that I was encouraging entries that weren’t just demos.

So... I would like to change the following 2 restrictions to “all entries must be one-filers without disk streaming”.

These restrictions will then be removed:-

“ The Effect must be a one-screener in one PRG (preferably compressed) (no disk streaming)
* Variations of the effect are allowed”

.. I'll take a look at scores at midnight (GMT) on 22nd January. Unless everyone disagrees, I'd like to just take a simple average of the score rather than the ranking - so I would total up the score and divide by the number of votes... no weighted algorithm.

@Trap: all ratings rather than public

@Trap: yep, rasters allowed of course as are the .. what’s it called again? The magic byte thing ($3fff, $7fff etc)..? Just no chars or bitmaps etc. DoubleDYPP in Memento Mori and Hedge of Disgrace (the new version) are prime examples. But we expect better than these of course.

@Jak: hah, no, vanilla C64 only. The dev kit will be coming from the UK. It’s arriving to my house tomorrow actually - so I will leave it in the box and just add new shipping labels :-)

Geez Raistlin, that IS insanely wonderful. Surely BeamRacer is allowed? (of course it is not but reading the rules litterally it is).

If shipping costs explode, you can contact me and I will donate the shipping label if shipping is from DE (I have special rates, y'know).

Are rasterbars allowed?

NEW: I'll be donating a MEGA65 devkit as the prize for this compo. I'll ship that out as soon as I can once the compo is over. It would be helpful if someone in Europe won so that I don't have postal costs to USA/Australia/Asia/Africa to consider ;-p

to do decent pic u need more than 8 sprites perhaps, not all artists can code to show that (perhaps)
