photos of computer setups
I have started collecting photos of "8-bit" computer set ups. I think it is fascinating to see the places where all kinds of computer magic happens/happened. I am mostly interested in home settings - rooms from any time and any place. Demoscene relation is good but not necessary, hi-res photos are preferred (with credits), informative texts and and stories is excellent.
Possibly, this is something that would be published aswell.
With a collection like this it is possible to see what was behind all those screen, to contextualize digital works with a physical place. Postdigital, as the theorists say. We wanna see your data office!

i wasn't aware of this site, some good ones in there! my plan is to make something similar, but not only focusing on the computer itself. i think it is great to see all the things around the computer, in a private space. party-pics is not so relevant for this kind of mission.

Old setup (early 2006), before it got cluttered with collected hardware and before I sold some of the stuff in the rack.
Please note the Commodore monitor on the floor ;-)
I was busy doing design work for a study, so the desk had to be empty. Currently there's a C128 set up.

Here are two incarnations of my setup in my previous apartment:
From 2007, an SX64, an Amiga 2000 and a PC.
Same corner, but in 2008. Now there is a breadbin C64 standing on top of an Amiga 500, and and some other PC (and myself contemplating some code):
I have a bunch of photos from earlier datacorners too, and I'll try to dig them out. |

if you have some nice trivia, please share. like fantastic cable solutions, stories of people using the data corner, usual errors, special features, etc...

Trivia about my second picture: Putting the bread bin c64 (not as big in the axis away from your body as the newer c64's) on top of an A500 is a solution I have found to be able to have a C64 at the very same table space as an Amiga 500. It is also possible to put 1541-disk drives on top of the A500 hard drive interface. Then I have a scart cable switch in front of the TV, so I can easily choose which computer that should be displayed on the screen. This is a solution that I still use (mid 2009) in my current room.
Regarding the big TV used on the second picture: Where I lived at that time, there was a garbage room where people threw away TV's every now and then (I guess people are going for flat screen TV's in these days). I tried out something like 10-15 TV's in order to find a big one with a really sharp image for the C64/A500 and settled for the one visible on this picture, which I still use, and which is great. Another good feature of this TV is that it is completely flat at the top, so you can put more things there. The other 10 or so TV sets were dumped in Goto80's one room apartment one day. As far as I know, they are still there. :) |
