straight from YOUR playlist

if you encounter a piece of sound so great you want to hang yourself for not being able to write something of similar quality...
if you think you've just found the best music ever made...
if you think a certain song/tune/symphony contains some unusually awesome elements...
...and you want to share it with other c64 composers and not necessarily via your facebook wall, just do it here.
explanations, reviews and so on warmly welcome.
one link per day max.
have fun.

somewhen back in the days, someone said to me 'apparently you do listen to a lot of arabian music'. it wasn't true, however. i was exposed to a lot of arabian music during the early childhood (thanks to my father, who spent a considerable part of his professional life in egypt, algeria and kuwait). only recently i started to explore it again. here's the result.

cheb khaled "trigue lycee"
if i was asked to do a ranking of the best male vocalists ever, arabian singers would occupy top three positions i think. no western voice contains comparable amount of masculinity and sweetness simultaneously ;)

xtc is my favourite band as of late. initially dubbed 'punk rock for prog rock fans', they quickly expanded far beyond that. so many great songs, so original style of composing (they invented as many innovative guitar tunings as sonic youth and glenn branca combined) and writing, so much variety. modal minimalist orchestral piece? no problem, folk melted with afrobeat? right away, stadium anthem with two key changes within a chorus? here you are, piano ballad in a baroque fashion? suit yourself.
in the track you are about to hear, they strive to be duke ellington (i guess). with a little productional help from todd rundgren, they succeed completely. now how's that for a punk rock trio from swindon? :)
please don't forget to dig the lyrics. it's almost poetry, to me at least.

xtc - the man who sailed around his soul
(upon the very first listening session with 'skylarking' album, i was sure andy partridge sings 'the man who sells a rounded soap', oh well)

@Hein: Zappa is great, indeed. @Randall, Sonic Youth, ack.. it is awesome indeed, side-by-side with Fugazi, Breeders, et cetera.. Now that we wander off in that direction. Primus SUCKS: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5M9knAQT_s0 :D

Gotta agree with XTC, Oranges and Lemons is one of my favorite albums. Zappa gets anther favorite vote with Broadway the Hard Way but most of his stuff is amazing.

These guys continue to excite me http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z29basl7Lcs not sure why, just something sets them apart.

*edit*
Sailing the Sea's of Cheese is another favorite :)

...or anything off their 1983 "Touch" album. Brilliant minimalist production!

@JCB: thanks for the PTH ref, love it.. Just dusted off the dir with Megadeth, My Dying Bride, The Gathering, Ministry, etc.. :-)

YouTube starves me from the stuff linked to by the Swedish guys? I get this dreaded screen telling me that one 'cannot access it in your country', which happens to be Germany momentarily :-)
