Event id #2288 : Ambient SID music competition

Your mission Jim, if you choose to accept it:

Create an ambient soundscape or composition for the SID.

The minimum length of the work is 12 minutes.

The tune must be delivered in an executable format and run on c-64. Single SID preferred, use multi-sid if you must, but we need to be able to run it on one of our devices.

For inspiration, listen to ambiences or ingame soundtracks of favourite games, such as black lamp, delta ingame, miami vice, tai pan and so forth. Be creative, forget the usual forms.

Use music, use sounds, use sound effects, generate music algorithmically if you can.

On the weekend of 9-11 of January 2015 we'll have a weekend of SID music with friends and we're planning on broadcasting the soundtrack of the event over the internet and we'll broadcast all the competition entries in their entirety.

Submit your entry to CSDB, link to the event, and vote by the rules of csdb. Status of the voting in the evening of 9th of January 2015 will determine the winner.

Winner shall have fame and special place in our hearts.

Two questions:
1. How many entries per scener?
2. If it's 2/multi SID, will it be played in MONO output?

We have a full weekend to fill with sid-music, so no limit on number of entries per author, but please, do not abuse our good faith by flooding the competition. :)

The actual broadcast situation may always cause surprises.

We have both stereo and mono dualsid platforms available and of course 6581/8580's of many sorts.

If you can identify the intended setup for the composition, we'll do our best to match it.

Cool...but...vote by the rules of CSDB? This site has voting fucked up by definition mrrrh I'd kindly suggest make own voting system like CreamD did years ago for his compos. That's the way to go imho.

I would change minimum time to e.g. 6 minutes. I'm not really sure if many people would like to listen to each 12 minutes long tune :D

probably good idea 6 mins,
30 tunes like this and the stream will take 6 hours, the audience will get killed somewhere close to x2012 :D

Not to mention ppl are expected to vote and listen to this too :D

but also singe/dual sid tunes guys, there's a significant advantage in using 2SID by those who knows what to do with it (esp in mono mode, Conrad is already mentioning this :D)

so, if there would be a lot of both, then probably two separate categories will work better.

No negotiating the rules. No need to rig the event to please particular audience. Other rules make other events.

We've kept the rules rather open, so that everyone interested can take their own perspective on it and how to achieve at least the 12 minutes of awesomeness. :)

I urge you to work around the invisible barriers you think there are.

ps. As stated, the submitted work must be a single executable that runs on c-64. Many ways to achieve 12 minutes+.

So, just do some sound that changes a bit all the time and keep that going for 12 minutes.

From an older test that had nothing to do with this compo:

http://www.6581.dk/lydpoelse.mp3

But you get the idea :)

@Mixer, sure there are ways, I think though some tied to say if we'd do something to happen over the tune time we'd want to make it worth listening, so then artificial stretching it to get 12 minutes is lame :)

@booker, I hear what you and others are saying on the length matter, but I also feel, that it is pre-judging something that does not exist yet.

Not asking to stretch what breaks when stretched. Asking to do something that meets the challenge.

Hubbard and Galway were able to do longer than 12 minutes already 25 years ago. Certainly after 25 years of learning someone should be able to cope with that 12 minute treshold. It is not like it is a Cooper test, or is it? :)

@Mixer, sure, the only difference is Hubbard and Galway are not doing anything for C64 anymore, so this renders the argument invalid....and we are (or at least we're trying to) :)

You set the rules, we said our opinions. I believe this will just sort it out on it's own, prods will come in and the show will go on. Props really for a will to organise a compo with a nice idea!

Woah, thx for reminding. Almost forgot this compo.
I'll had my "audio slices" complete for a while now and have to write a "random" arrangement routine that generates a 12 min. track out of them.

Little pondering about randomizing patterns with your favourite play routine:

The pattern selection of the playroutine often has this or similar table lookup for selecting the next pattern to play.

x=voiceNR 0,1,2...
lda tracklistlo,x
sta $02
lda tracklisthi,x
sta $03
ldy trackkpos,x
lda ($02),y
; interpret track values as commands (repeat, transpose, end, loop) until a valid pattern is found.

One could simply replace that with jsr to pseudorandom generator such as one in http://codebase64.org/doku.php?id=base:fast_8bit_ranged_random_.. and make sure that the rnd lookuptable only contains valid pattern values that you have actually composed. Obviously a bit more code is needed if each track(voice) must draw from its own pool of patterns.

Just a thought.

I think I'll just utilize SID Wizard subtune-jump feature which also can do a subtune jump only for a single SID voice track. So I'll have control of larger segments than just a pattern.
Of course the same could be achieved with your idea if you use larger patterns while "composing". I just found that subtune-feature is a very convient way for this.

Deadline is at 23:00 CET, in few minutes. Entries submitted after that will be outside compo releases.

You have voting time until tomorrow Saturday 10.1.2015 until 20:00(CET).

The compo broadcast will be at 20:00 10.1.2015. The stream will be recorded an made available afterwards.

We had some trouble setting up our gear today, so we won't be streaming until tomorrow.

Songs are being recorded
-Commodore 64 eqp. SID 8580R5
-Commodore 64 eqp. 2SID 8580R5 + 8580R5
++New cables for "better" sound.
++New Audiointerface for incremented sound quality.

Have a good one and yes I will notice when all songs are recorded (5/10 done so far).

Hello,

Instead of tested configuration that worked perfectly last week we have a hack-cast tonight. :)

Ironically, my mixer broke. So now, we only have a simple DJ mixer that does not have stereo panning. That means that dual sid will be full left and full right stereo in broadcast.

For the interested the tech is following:

2 sid 6581+8580 c-64 in mirrored or dual configuration.
1 sid 8580 c-64 cable split to stereo.
2 sid 8580+8580 in dual configuration.

DJ mixer levels are set quite modestly. All compo entries are single 8580 or stereo 8580.

Output stream will have slight compression. (treshold -20db ratio 3.5 output 12db)

We'll circulate stream url once ready. Apparently the proxy server is also recovering from emergency maintenance as well. We have plan C for that as well :)

Plan C always works :)

As a tune, Scarzix' entry is my favourite, but based on the ambient theme, I'd say any of the MultiStyle Labs participants wins. Difficult to choose one winner from those, though. The soundscapes are all incredible and inspiring.

If I participated, I would've made it fluffy and friendly with little mechanical and harsh sounds, since that's my prefered type of ambient. Maybe next time.

Why all these "this isnt a real compo tune" comments? I read the rules before I did my entry:

"The tune must be delivered in an executable format and run on c-64.

Use music, use sounds, use sound effects, generate music algorithmically if you can."

- so I decided to be inspired by Delta, Parallax, Lightforce to name some of my real alltime favorites and thought this was the time to try to use stereo SID with the new Beta of CheeseCutter 2SID.

Secondly, my goal was to make a long and loopable ambient chill-out tune that wouldnt become annoying in my ears after second loop aka something I might want to hear for hours...and infact I did friday, as I had the nice Zynaps player running while the timer hit 99:59 twice...

I cant seriously understand these negative vibes from you guys? it was stated as an ambient themed music compo where we could go out of the box... and to be honest, I spend two nights... and I think I delivered... so whats your problem?

Regarding individual opinions about what is ambient: It is not about who is right or wrong, it is about different tastes as it should.

Mixer: There is demand for such events, obviously. I really enjoyed listening to the stream together with the MSL gang, drinking a beer or two while discussing the entries.

I am sure you would have gotten more entries and voters if the compo theme wasn't that special (experimental music with a minimum lenght of 12 minutes) but then again that's what made it such a memorable compo for me. So kudos for sticking to your initial idea and not let anybody talk you out of it.

Listening whole morning, amazing stuff!

All very clever done indeed! Twelve minutes is not what you do every day, atleast I don't.

Scarzix: thumbs up, great job and congratulations! (mij favorite tune and editor aswell;))

Linus: Great sounding and building up tricky versatile ambience.. top notch (-:P

In general I would do a tiny bit of things different and using more arps...
Also when having six tracks to your desposal I would have loved more synthesized chord structures...

Regarding 6 channels and chords, true...next time I might start three days before deadline ;-)

Regarding how to listen to Singularity, I decided to go away from my usual principles of pure and raw C64 so why not push the new options to next level... my composing therefore suffers from being rather bad i. a headset without realtime halleffect/mixing of the left and right side. but if you have a good set of speakers or surround headset as I have the tune really becomes alive.. at least thats how I designed it.

I know, this is sort of making VSP effects that can only run on certain hardware etc. sorry about that, but I really wanted to push the stereo effects further than I have tried before. Really happy that so many liked it. Thanks for that.

I can promise this is not the last stereo SID tune from my side... maybe compo rules wont allow it, but Then I will find other usages for them, so dont mind me. ;-)

btw. I have never seen so fast feedback on soundcloud regarding amounts of plays and likes in so few days for any previous tunes... I guess I got really lucky with this one.

Thanks to Mixer to force me to these rules. it was top fun to force myself to apply the rules on my own composing, aka... making an ultra long and still loopable and not too boring tune... I prefere to listen to tunes that can be looped without annoying me.

and Hein, yes I am serious when I go in for a music compo... otherwise there is no nerve or love in my composing... ;-)

lets have fun... and do more cool stuff... so Jazz/porn/elevatoraction/wizball tunes are next?

For some reason we used to call pr0n videos "Danish Westerns" in Northern Germany in the 80s :D

As this compo is almost 5 years old - how is the interest here in doing another one, with the same rules?

It wasn’t, but ‘Single SID preferred’ is sort of discrimination ;)
