Event id #3043 : Last night (melody compo)

How much can we interfere into your project template? Do we start from your sng at all?

No, no need to start from my template. The only rule is that I still want to be able to recognize the chord progression, with a melody on top. Apart from that I'm very flexible. :)

Now, as a compo, this is very interesting. However I do feel that a man shouldn't be held responsible for his actions while intoxicated, as if everything went as expected and even as desired, he is in a totally irresponsible state and can (will) do stupid things. Like set up a very niche compo with unheard of monetary prizes.

In my opinion, you Stinsen shouldn't feel a tiniest bit obligated to shovel out 1.6 large ones, and no one should get offended if the prizes are sobered up a little bit. Maybe retract the monetary prizes, or at least divide by 10? 100, 50 and 10 sound a whole lot sensible than 1000, 500 and 100.

This is probably not to everyone's favour (especially if someone entered the compo on a sole purpose to hopefully pocket thousand of Stinsen's hard earned euros), but hey ho. I wouldn't enter the compo for the reason that if somehow, by a miracle, I would end up in top three, taking 100-1000€ from a fellow hobbyist who did rash decisions and reckless promises while drunk would feel just plain wrong.

Just my 2 eurocents.

I'm with Frostbyte, I always am, but if I participate and if I win(those are two planet size if's), I still want 5 euros. I feel this compo would actually benefit if it didn't have the prizes involved or if they at least were more symbolic. Now it adds a somewhat sour taste. The tune in all it's niceness should be enough inspiration for the good folks here!

"man shouldn't be held responsible for his actions while intoxicated" - pretty valid for compo context but in general I cannot even stress how many things are wrong with this statement :D It was Stinsen's decision entirely - probably nobody would mind him withdrawing cash prize. I wouldn't for sure.

Yes, withdraw or dramatically reduce the cash prizes. (And start arranging SIDwine-compos again, where the winner get bottles of wine!)

Someone 3D-print small statues of Stinsen to send out, pls. :) I would love one, but I can't make music. :(

To be honest I had assumed that if he indicated (as he did) that he is happy to continue to offer the compo’s prizes even after sobering up, then he is more than able to afford it. He’s a big lad, he can do as he pleases with his money, etc.

On the other hand, I would not be upset if he were to decide to withdraw the prizes; I enjoyed putting my entry together, and I imagine that there will be more interesting tunes to come. Obviously he should not be paying out if it’s going to do him any harm.

I like the idea with wine replacing cash prizes.

I agree that the prizes certainly were unjustified and probably detrimental to the compo as such and I do regret putting in them in there to begin with for those reasons. That being said, I don't want to change them (because I feel that is fundamentally bad) and I don't have a problem with paying them out.
Let us say they come from the "visiting demoparties expenses fund", which for obvious reasons has been untapped recently. :(

I'm actually more worried that I will have to pick winners from what seems to be some really great entries so far (not listening until deadline :).
So thank you all contributors for the (presumably lovely) entries!

It wouldn’t be that bad at all Stinsen, I don’t think anyone wants you to cough up out of any kind of obligation! And +1 for the wine/beers prize idea in future... :)

Amen to that, symbolic prizes or just fame and glory for the win! This turned into quite the spectacle... :D

So whosoever ("Gee, I hope I win!" (Maniac Mansion) - hehe, I really don't, I'm not a musician) wins, can do whatsoever they want with the money.

But IF(!<- normally musicians! really need money, probably because they are almost as lazy bastards as gfxians) anyone wins and feels bad, donate the money or a part of it either to charity or scene related purpose such as financing X-Party/BCC Party/YouNameIt... of course I'm talking of REAL parties; even the rent for a 3 day party place eats half a grand minimum, in Berlin easily more and renting a whole city such as Holland... /o\ gotta go :D

I think I have to amend my own rule that I have hard learned when I was making some graphics tutorials for local website/magazine in past and lost motivation quickly after I signed the royalties contract.

1. The best motivation ever is fun of doing things. If you throw in the money, the fun usually ends.

Update: With exception, if the fun is at expense of the person who threw in the money (accidentally).

Feel free to rephrase it, I'm not in the mood to play with words.

Anyway, I just accidentally stumbled upon this compo when I checked Jammer's entry that I thought, would be, the entry to another compo that was discussed elsewhere (that involved certain perfectly human activity). To my surprise, there wasn't any special effects in the tune, so I had to dig deeper and here I am, talking about doing things instead of doing them, as usual ;-))

Well, that was my intention, but I can't really say this compo was very well defined or thought through in any regard. :D

Btw, that 'other' compo sounded interesting enough I must say haha.

One thing that seems hard to understand for many is that even if one edits a tune by author X (even more so if he remakes the tune from scratch in another editor), it doesn't make the new tune RELEASED by author X and his group.
Entries like
One Billion Euro
Letzte Nacht im Norden
Last Night with Her Hitachi
are not coop rels with G*P, only Last Night is released by G*P. You should fix your entries.

That is correct. I love it as it is, and was asked before release if the MultiStyle Labs tunes could be released under the GP label as well, and agreed on it.

I don't think I'll have the time to make something for the compo. However, in case I win something I would offer it to a cause, like supporting a demoparty in the future. Maybe a couple hundreds of Euros would cover some booze, etc.
Anyway, keep it up guys, it's a great competition so far.

Stinsen, spoiler alert! You'll have hard time with choosing a winner :)

Vincenzo: Half of it for booze, drugs and whores, other half charity sounds fair to me :D

I'm not up to date with actual rate of drugs and hookers. Are you sure all would be covered by the prize money? :)

@Vincenco: Depends on your ranking. (Half of) Place #3 prize might not be enough for top class hostess and cocaine, but for sure a crate of beer, a bottle of Schnaps and a visit of your local village whore in her trailer ^^

BTT After this compo is over, I think, I need new ears some days without listening to Stinsen/remixes, as this is getting quite an earworm and listening to new tunes starts to feel like Groundhog day (Wow, a new release, that's a cool one, hmh, sounds familiar...) Slight case of overdose, on the other hand, can you ever have enough Stinsen :D

PS: The 10 entry minimum has been reached, but still a week left, so go on, otherwise (if it stays 10) I might be assassinated for my compo-filler ;)

Oh yes, I am fearing this very much. :O Feeling very humbled and surprised by the number of entries so far, thank you. <3

As for the TheRyks suggestions on how to spend prizes, those sounds like a recipe for a last night you don't want to remember. :D

But but... that's why you save half of the money for charity or sponsoring BCC or any other party, this will make good for all your sins :D
