Event id #3244 : Intro Creation Competition 2022

<Post edited by TheRyk on 14/2-2023 23:59>

Now coders, warm your fingers, winter's coming :)

Quoting Didi in 2021 discussion
...
@ThRyk: Feel free to organize something different for a change. I may participate.

OK, so I grab the torch and seize the chance to make some changes. Main new thing is, we want to do 8K/2K/1K this time, because
Quoting Krill
Quoting TheRyk
16K is boring :)
I concur. That's practically unrestricted. =)

and 4K has been done very often over the years.

Stricter limits, but no more care about "RAM footprints", so we also need no discussion about whether this or that part of RAM/IO/ZP count or not etc. -> Crunched (or not crunched, your decision) file size matters but nothing else.

obligatory RULES for ALL categories
- works on a vanilla C64 (PAL standard) without any extensions
- 1 part intro, however, fade-ins and fade-outs are allowed
- shows at least one logo
- displays a changing/moving text message (e.g. scrolltext, text fading in/out...)
- has to be interruptable by SPACE
- no ripped or vastly recycled code; ripped gfx/music is allowed
- not released before entering the competition
- executable format startable with RUN
NEW! Using other VIC-Banks than %11 is forbidden, so don't use RAM higher than $3FFF (IO and Vectors in page $FF are ok).
<- reaction on complaints

8K
- crunched range is $0801 till maximum $27ff
- contains music
- is linked to this competition as "C64 Fast Intro" entry (lacking a more fitting category)

2K
- crunched range is $0801 till maximum $0fff
- is linked to this competition as "C64 2K Game" entry (lacking a more fitting category)

1K
- crunched range is $0801 till maximum $0bff
- is linked to this competition as "C64 1K Intro" entry

NEW crack-your-grinch-head-category
- get this .prg file and link it at $2000 (ranges till $CFFF)
https://csdb.dk/release/download.php?id=278763
e.g. in ACME
*= $2000
   !bin "linkthis.prg",,2

- $2000-$CFFF must be the same before RUN and after SPACE press
- link your file to this competition as "C64 WiLD Demo" entry

More rules/info

Maximum 2 entries per participant and category, i.e. max. 6 altogether.
However, entries are allowed to be withdrawn from the compo in favour of new entries until deadline.
Deadline for entry submission is 29th Jan 2023, 23:59:59 CET.

Then voting runs from 14th Feb 2023 till Feb 28th 23:59:59 CET.
CSDb votes will NOT decide the result, there will be some half-smart alternative external solution,
anyone with a CSDb account will be granted access to voting, self-votes will be eliminated.

No material prizes can be won, though, apart from eternal fame and the mere fun of competing.

Have fun!
Cheers
Ryk

PS: I reserve the right to disqualify entries for violating competition rules or human rights, but as I value freedom of speech and art highly, this will hopefully not be necessary; just follow the rules, use common sense and don't be a dick, pretty please.

Hu, so it is allowed to use the entire RAM?

That's not an "Intro" at all then, and pretty boring in my book. Too bad.

It's not inconsistent - its just not for "Intro". It's a "Onefile demo with speedcode generator" compo now.

Yes, this is now a one file demo compo (DCC2022?), not an intro compo.

Still, a good selection of file size limits, and the lack of footprint limits opens the door for BitPickler (the cruncher used for Onscreen 5k). Hoping to release that by Christmas.

Could link it to a 4kb Game Coding Competition or so and still use it as an intro for a 4k game.

Jammer: Thank you, thank you. :)

What Groepaz and ChristopherJam said.

Without any kind of RAM footprint restriction, only the logo and text requirement makes it a something-like-an-intro competition, but it's actually just a thinly veiled size-restricted-onefiled-demo competition. =)

Things like 8K were interesting with only 8K to play with at runtime, but with all RAM available it's pretty much unrestricted again, after all.

Seriously, as no one made any entries yet, it's not too late to make changes.

New Rule: Using other VIC-Banks than %11 is forbidden, so don't use RAM higher than $3FFF (IO and Vectors in page $FF are ok).

But that's really all I'm willing to offer to the Grinches.

I do see the point of rule discussion and hence tagged it
"Demos that look like Intros 1k/2k/8k Compo + 8K Crack Intro"
The last one refers to the crack-your-grinch-head-category.
I briefly considered doing the latter also as 2k and 1k (of course with bigger LINKTHIS.prg file), but even more sub categories don't seem to make sense. So if you got a 2K or 1K _runtime_ release, you might want to save it for another ICC with harder restrictions.

Anyway, 1st entry is there, so the time of complaining is over and the time of competing has begun.

Oh wait, so the grinch think is a fourth category? Thanks for clarification, I’d been erroneously assuming that it was a new rule attached to each of the first three categories (40k payload combined with 1/2/8 k loading size).

So is the bank 0 rule dropped altogether now, or?

(Thanks for taking all this on, btw)

Sweet!

Re: using whole memory (which I gather isn’t allowed now), I don’t see why this stops something being an intro… it’s common to link small games (eg. 1k games) with small intros - and since the game is small, it makes sense that there’s going to be a shit-ton of unused memory available for the intro to stomp on.

Craptastic Compo has a small game limit I believe? 4K or something?

But anyway… the grinches stole 48k of potential mem from us so meh :p

CJ the no violation of other banks than %11 (i.e. RAM higher than $3FFF) is a global rule.

The Grinch category also makes use of $2000-$3FFF a little complicated, I won't tell more ;)

Thanks!

hilarious choice of linkthis.prg btw.

Just checking my reading of these two:

Using other VIC-Banks than %11 is forbidden, so don't use RAM higher than $3FFF (IO and Vectors in page $FF are ok).
and
$2000-$CFFF must be the same before RUN and after SPACE press

So, for grinch entries, that sounds like we are not allowed to write to RAM from $4000 to $fffb at any time, but we are allowed to write to 2000-3fff while the entry is running, as long as we restore the contents afterwards. Is that correct?

yes, absolutely, apart from vectors in page $FF. Just copying $2000-$3FFF somewhere in high RAM would be too easy to allow for hardcore grinches.

Coming back to lowermost bank, as the example with ghostbyte shows totally forbidding writes higher that $2000 would be out of question.

Disagreed ;-) … 100% I agree that -most- intros should be small and use little memory.. but the oldschool intros could technically use whatever the heck memory they please - so long as the game they’re linked to works. And preferably so that disk blocks aren’t wasted, particularly for small games.

A 1k game, though.. if the intro is 512bytes but uses 64k while running, isn’t that better than a 1k intro?

Both would still be intros. Memory footprint has zero relevance in that instance.

Embarrassingly, my first ever COVID infection ate my brain quite badly for the past six weeks, so I've not managed to get my Crack-your-Grinch-Head entry anywhere near ready.

That's bad, CJ, I was really counting on you with the Grinch cat :) Anyway, get well soon!

Final questins:
- the limit "Maximum 2 entries per participant and category" was meant per _CODER_ not per group
- the "is linked to this competition as "C64 2K Game" entry (lacking a more fitting category)" seemed to have irritated some souls, actually putting it in that _COMPO_ would have been enough, what you fill in _release_type_ doesn't matter a lot to me, please do not complain in forums, make a demo about it... ;)

Many great entries so far!

Some 4-5 hours left, let's see!

Snailmail disks (new old stock, freshly formatted and Zoom-Floppy-written, as close 2 brandnew as you can get nowadays) went to the letterbox in Holstein yesterday high noon
(sorry 4 all the delay)
and the first one arrived in Frankfurt this morning \o/ <- so much for snailmail, fankly, I can't blame the postmen, only my personal real life, work sux, family and slacker issues like procrastinating BCC#17 orga -hehe- kept me from being some 6 weeks faster

Originally, I said the fastest 5 voters, but as only 7 altogether claimed a disk,
I sent one to each of these 7 - each with an individual Easter egg.

Non-Germans, be aware, I maybe broke international law (again, what else could you expect from an evil pirate)...
"Deutsche Post" Homepage told me on their stamps shop homepage:
shipping other items than "documents" as "international letter" was forbidden.
The right way to do it was as parcel (probably including customs declaration and whatnot)
- which would have been around 60 € to Australia... <- which I found slightly over the top compared to 3,70 € for intl letter.
So I just decided a 5,25" disk _IS_ a document. :D

Why do I tell you this?
Well, Australian customs offices are so notorious that TV docu-soaps are broadcast in Europe about them x-raying and flame-thrower-destroying stuff that's not according to whatever rules...
So my sending disks as letter might result in guys in Austria, Australia and Denmark not getting their sending or being told to pick it up at some customs office
<- In that case, don't do that, let the customs officers have some fun with it, just contact me, I'll find another solution, either I email you the images or I pass new envelopes to the next Australian, Austrian or Dane I meet at the X Party.

Cheers

Also, receiving a disk via snail mail nowadays feels absolutely thrilling! Thank you! But "Next time" please use cardboards on both sides of the disk like an old-school swapper! ;-) Disk arrived in perfect state, though!

BRAVE NEW WORLD: These so-called "stamps" you can buy online and print... /o\ what you get is some tiny QR-Code, you can add a piccie but only if you don't add the address /o\ then I went for no piccie but yes address and the PDF got all special chars wrong... I could understand (not excuse) if for some reason my .TXT editor-typed addresses might have not fit into some lame German Post not-really-unicode... BUT I got really disappointed when stuff like "ÖSTERREICH" which I did not type but select via "select country" drop-down ON THE POST HOMEPAGE resulted in "?STERREICH"...

Bottom line: No stamps back this time, these so-called "stamps" (even if the QR-Code would allow using them twice) deserve nothing else after sending arrived than being burnt with hellfire :)

Hi @The Ryk!

My disk arrived today with many "?" marks on the stamp sticker :-). Seems the German Post is not quite aware about the German specific characters like "ö,ä,ü" and "ß" which are in my name and also in many, many other names…. :-D

BTW: Ryk you made a quite interesting envelope which worked good enough for sending it to a neighbour country… (The Prime Logo smile on the front also put a smile on my face…)

So a big thank you for everything – now I own two real disks… wohooo!!!

Hejhej! Got my disk in the mail today. Packaging: Man, you really still have faith in the Deutsche Post :-D
But: it was completely unbent and read 100% 00,00,OK,00 -- Thanks!!

A word on the feeling of getting floppy disks via snail mail: such an intense flashback of memories. Awesome.

The whackest disk i got was (as a test) a 3,25" Amiga floppy only with the metal slider locked by a strip of tape, the address on the sticker and a stamp on it - no envelope. And it still worked. That one (and the C64 floppies i own) i'll keep until i'm gone.

I just got my disk from the neighbor who had taken it for me from the postman.

new tip #2 for Easter Egg:
No diskmon or BAM-peeking required,
Watch the results from disk and be an ornithologist!

PS as this didn't help, tip #3:
It don't matter if you're black or white but it matters to know left from right... and don't close your ears while reading

Disk arrived in Denmark, "only" 11 days later. \o/ Thanks, Ryk! You shouldn't have!

Haven't checked the content yet, but I assume it's from you since it's ~20 years since last time I got a snailmail disk.

Looking forward to trying to solve the riddle, although I'll probably fail.

11 days from Holstein (apart from Schleswig the northernmost part of Germany) to Denmark...
Not very impressive even if it was delivered by a horseman X_D

Disk arrived in Australia \o/
Possibly a few days ago, I'm a bit patchy checking the letter box.

Thanks, Ryk, and thanks so much for organising the competition!

First time I've received a floppy in the mail from Europe since the early 90s I think - so nice to experience that again :)

Wowzers!

Would have bet someone in charge would lose it/send it back/demand extra charge or the disk would cause trouble at the customs office, great that it worked out, thx 4 reporting!

Cheers
Ryk
