MixSID - stereo SID board released

What do you guys think about this? Yay or poop? He charges 25 - shipping included, but you need to assemble the kit yourself. |

I like it and price is reasonable. Unfortunately I don't have spare SID chips for stereo output and even had to get a SwinSID Ultimate so that there's some output on my "travelling" machine.
What I miss is some sort of "protection" circuit on the output.
Hermit showed me an interesting network a few days ago from resistors and some diodes which could ensure that the output couldn't be fed back to less than -0.3V on the SID side. The positive clamping is trivial of course. As I remember it didn't reduce the amplitude significantly after the coupling capacitor, but he knows the details better. |

Best available design at the moment IMO. Versatile, looks properly designed, not limited to any specific SID combination (like most 2-SID boards). Features close to SIDFX sans the softconfig and auto configuration.
And the detailed specifications and assembly and configuration instructions are something to admire. |

How does it compare to Project SIDFX (formerly known as Sidfixer) by Lotus/Devia? (Except price. SidFx will cost about 70 to 80, but is assembled). |

Looks like 90% of SIDFX at a third of the price, but you have to solder yourself. Sounds like we have two great options! |

SIDFX, mostly automatic microcontroller-based design, including SID type autodetection, filter cap and voltage selection. MixSID, manual setup.
SIDFX, completely redesigned power circuitry to remove power rail noise. MixSID, no.
SIDFX, fully isolated from the system bus via programmable logic to remove the usual VIC-whine and all the other noise produced by the rest of the system. MixSID, no.
The rest is the same, mono/stereo selection, etc.
SIDFX if you intend to get the best possible emulation-clean sound, the last ever two SID board you'll ever need. MixSID if you just want two SIDs with slightly better sound quality than DualSID/other similar solutions. |

It's one thing to compare specifications, and of course another to try out the actual products. Once both units are available, I for one would love to see a combined review in one of the diskmags. |

As I understood it, at the moment there's really not much chance of buying a SIDFX if you didn't already preorder one, so it's not very interesting from a consumer perspective anyway. |
