Tried it with a few sids that I noticed had issues with previous vice builds. Works very well now. Sounds just like my 8580 c64c.

This tune in particular sounded broken regardless of filter bias/cutoff used. but now works fine

Working without issue on this end so far! :)

Tested with a few speech/digi titles as well.

Was the bug related to https://sourceforge.net/p/vice-emu/bugs/1013/?

Or which commit fixes the "farting"?

Tested my own tunes with this version. Sounds right out-of-the-box - no need for fiddling with with filter parameters. Yay! \o/

Edit: Had a really close listen to En Chaleur , which has some heavy filter use + volume slides to mimic side-chaining and it sounds exactly as excepted, including the just barely audible crackling caused by changes to volume register. Time to get rid of the old versions of Vice for me. :)

That filter model is some highly impressive code. Kudos!

@Groepaz: When building from source myself is there any new config to set or so?

just compiled r37853 with --enable-new8580filter

sounds pretty good so far, but I am in no way an expert.
SYS64738 Days was problematic in vice some versions ago and sounds good now.

Yeah the new filters sound really good. Cannot complain about the sound quality.

Just one thing.. Vice is really really low on volume here on my build.

Spotify in the browser blasts my ears off as i have to crank the laptop all up to 100% volume. Even checked the mixer, it's all on 11.

Any way to make Vice play louder? It's really dim compared to other sounds here..

that sounds like a problem on your end :) (tried resetting vice settings with -default?)

Nope "Restore to default settings" didn't make a change here.

Still the browser is way way louder..

Have to set the renderer to cairo due to my graphics card in the laptop, but that should make a difference?

Ftr the build you supplied is equally low on volume here.

Ftr2 C64debugger seems to be on the lower volume sid aswell.

Sidplay2.6w is way louder.

So yeah, i am open for ideas :)

Quality of sound is improved comparing to the previous version, however, I still think 2.4 sounds better, at least to me. Nevertheless, hell of a job!

"the previous version" has exactly the same filter code (and sound) as 2.4 :)

So I have no clue why 2.4 sounds better to me :) Maybe this 25 years of sid masturbation slowely destroys my hearing :)

Hey, thx @ Groepaz for the personal invitation :-)

I can confirm the current revision fixed that weird distortion glitch I got on my vice builds.

The tune in this demo had heavy problems before: You Will Be a Fossil Soon

New Filters Before:
https://jansalleine.com/trans/fossil-vice-new-filters.wav

New Filters Current:
https://jansalleine.com/trans/fossil-vice-new-filters-r37853.wav

Old Filters:
https://jansalleine.com/trans/fossil-vice-old-filters.wav

Unfortunately I still don't have a setup that allows recording from real machine for a "real" comparison. But it for sure doesn't sound anything like the completely distorted filters in the first WAV ;-)

I think it's safe to conclude it's all Linus & GRG's fault. Without them, emulation would've been perfect for years already ;)

also playing that fossil intro now, and yup this sounds pretty good now, I also remember this one sounded fucked up in the past too.

Thanks. I thought it’s due to the heavy overload of loud sid listening ;) should stop wanking immediately ;)
I did few comparisons with real hardware recording done by Xiny6581 and I still think new version struggles with filters. Check Hang Drum - https://youtu.be/FMbT2EtJqY8 and then listen to it at Vice. There is slight difference. Vice 2.4 sounds exactly as on the real machine. Maybe it just me but you were asking for the feedback so I’ve shared my five cents.

Damn nice tune :=)

I can hear the problem with the regular filters (which are like 2.4), but not with the new ones. *shrug*

Ok, I've been adjusting filter bias and by increasing the value up to -2200/-2400 it sounds better.

In case of this tune Bad Ass I went up to -1500 to achieve good result.

Thanks for your hard work guys.
