Data capacity on a tape

Does anyone know what the storage capacity of a 60 and 90 minute tape is?

I'm thinking bout the maximum capacity, i.e. where a fastloader is used.

A C64 disk could hold 2x171 kb, but when it comes to tapes, we must be into the megabytes.

Depends on the format and also the number of 0 vs 1 bits.

A rough calculation gives about 28000 byte/minute raw capacity for turbo tape 64 format data (give or take).

(0 = 208 cycles, 1 = 320 cycles)

So around 800 kB / 1200 kB depending on the type of tape. That sounds about right.

Which is something you would not be able to load at once. If you instead decide to fill up the tape with lots of 50kb files then the capacity will be bit less, since you need the header for each file.

@Golara: The differences those headers would take are often smaller than differences between the same declared tape lengths from various manufacturers.

Here's an older thread discussing maximising tape storage capacity: Tape loaders using more than two pulse widths for data

If you want to pack the data densely and want to be able to stop/start dynamically you’ll have to ask the user to rewind slightly here and there.
(Unless you fully implement loading during wind-down/wind-up of the motor)
