New run of C64C casing coming in three colors

I knew someone bought the C64C molds a while back and now it appears we'll be able to get white, blue, or red cases if this Kickstarter is funded.

@Oswald - I didn't find the molds, this guy Dallas did. He found them last year at a warehouse and bought them at auction.

@ HCL : yes, it'll fit! i've got an old board in a c64c case - but there are no holes for the screws to hold the old keyboard in place (i don't know about the new casing in the link above). it's not a big problem though - i used a small piece of wood so i didn't need to glue or drill anything.

Yeah, The C64 C case will happily fit all versions of the C64 motherboard. There's even screw holes for both "short" and "long" boards. After all the first C64 C models came with the same MB as late breadbins. The switch to new MB and chipset was few years later.

Like nomistake says, the keyboard needs some support to hold it in place. There's sheet metal profiles originally. So something's needed - unless these molds are for the late case, where the keyboard is simply clipped on to the top half of the case. But I guess not - afaik those cases had the Commodore logo embossed into the case instead of a sticker.

And what Mr. SID said :/

I got all three but realized that I only want the red and the blue. If anyone's interested in taking the white one off my hands (obviously for less than kicking a single case), send a PM.

Now someone will have to find the molds for the breadbox as well. :-) Awesome story!

lame quest: let me get things straight, this guy found those molds 30 yrs ago and want to produce "new" ones or he is
selling those founded oldie goldie molds? if the latter is
correct , why ffs he need kickstarter , can't he just simply
sell them through Ebay ?

Dr.j: The moulds are solid steel and weigh more than 1 metric ton each. He is not selling moulds, he is using the moulds to produce new plastic casings.

I'd love one of the transparent ones but it looks like you need to buy one of the other options first.

Fuck that shit. The transparent one is the only one here actually interesting, if you want a coloured c64 case you can just use some sandpaper, primer and paint and do it yourself. Might end up being a bit cheaper than $35 + shipping + US import tax too.

you can actually paint them in a way that paint will not go off anytime soon - if you know what you are doing :)

Transparent pink: hella yes.

flat pink: I don't care. I can do that myself but it's not really what I'm necessarily interested in. (:

Yes, the colors this guy is offering are kind of bland. But consider this - if this run goes well, and is profitable, there's no reason he won't try another run with other colors. If there's a demand, as proven by the success of this first run, there will certainly be a future run, no?

According to the most recent totals the three original colors are almost gone. The original colors will have a 500 case run and the number of remaining cases are

0 blue
35 white
23 red

The add-on cases will have a 5000 count run and the number of remaining cases are

3672 transparent
4661 beige

There is one more day before lockdown, so these totals will change

He asked about 128 cases in the survey, so safe to assume he'll run a pledge campaign for that case in the future.

Bidding starts at 200€

Although already expensive I would consider getting one for the first mentioned price of about 149€.
200€ with a couple of chips is a no-go for me.

This smells like greed a little too much in my opinion

I think Jens is painfully aware that the masses don't buy C64 motherboards anymore.

Somehow I doubt he'd sell anywhere near 10 000 units even at half that price. The target audience for this kind of hardware is just too small.

I find it amazing and respectable that these boards have been developed in the fist place.

True! It's pure hobby and love for engineering. I don't think it's about making money at all. If it was, Jens would have come up with something like the 1541 Ultimate II instead of the Chameleon (which is a complete system in itself). Or at least something that's reasonably priced and something we all want! ;-)

The price tag is a bit too steep for me, it's a starting price for bidding in an auction (well, not really an auction since you can't over- or under bid someone else but yourself).

I'll wait for the commercial launch, if this will ever see the light of day, and see what that does to the pricing. I'd really love to get my hands on one or two of these reloaded boards ;)

i wonder where this number comes from.... (none of these retro products made these days go anyway near that number)

I just picked a number that is waaay above any reasonable sale estimates, and still in the lower end of what I would call "for the masses." The point being, it's not really the price that precludes it from becoming a mass market product.
