compos and voting on csdb

Am I the only one finding it hard to vote in compos on here? Often one do vote for the entries that are the best in the compo. like 1-10 IN THAT COMPO against entries IN THAT COMPO. It is a compo vote and not a general vote on the whole history of the c64 in a way. Could one create a compo vote thing for compos? That would be so cool in my mind. Just a thought.

...but if you just vote the way you would, normally, there would be no need for an extra feature to begin with? Just asking. :)

that is not true. Because a tune or image can be a 10 in the compo put a 7 in general scene history? You see my point?

Like a logo compo on 32 char tiles could be a 10 in that compo but still be beaten by a long way with some of the more fullscreen logos like the mirage logo in their x demo! So it is like the compo should get the vote in a way... not on general overall scene history - just my thinking!

Yes, but a "compo vote" could also be related how well the entry fits the compo theme - which somehow has nothing to do with a "global vote". :)

I agree, but it's misused because a real swap-/release-platform is missing. The people are already here, so why not improve it and expand its already existing usefulness?

@PAL: Good point, exactly what i was yelling about last year, or was it 2 years ago? ..probably 3 then :P.

But the answer has already been said.. This is not a compo platform, only mis-used as such. That said, i can only proclaim my own solution: Stop voting!! I removed all my votes and my life has been better ever since. ..and as a plus, you can still go voting for any SID-compo or char-logo-compo here and make your voice heard, and remove your votes afterwards :).

It sounds like you would prefer ranked choice voting over range voting used on csdb.

I prefer range voting. That way I don't have to rank the entries and only need to score them individually without comparing entries and preferring one over the other. So the current system is good for me :)

We are currently transforming several places of CSDb and are working at several places to get entries into more shape. Even though other mods and trusted users may not agree completely they will surely admit that we have more pressing issues at hand than the voting system.

It has been said many time before and I completely support that opinion of a minor radical amount of users (as it seems): delete all votes, disable the voting system completely - focus on the existing entries and make this a database!

Keeping the votes can only be a rough indicator for people only occassionally looking at c64 software - in it's current form CSDb is not a voting platform.

BESIDES all that - some categories have such a ridiculous vote count - DELETE ALL or ALL OF YOU should vote a whole lot more!

PS: I really liked CreaMD's image voting "platform" a while ago (for the rambo compo) - likely easier to "include" compo based voting on a somewhat attached 3rd party platform rather than stress Perff with additional requests ? At least for the moment :)

Thanx CountZero. I had fun making voting systems for c64 music compos and rambo revisited gfx compo, unfortunately I was never able to make it (the administration) userfriendly. It was spontaneous development. Some of the tasks had to be done manually, and also it was re-tweaked randomly for every new compo I organized. There is no solid existing solution on my side.

Why are you so nerds that you can not even see my point? If there are compos one would hold, maybe CSDB would be a great platform for that was my only point! CSDB is the site where everything new is on? I can not understand that you do not see my point? I understand that CSDB is not all about that or this, what I am stating is only that it would be fun to have such a feature. nothing more, not attacking not blaming, not being negative, not being bad... just a simple feature request. my god how detailed and how personal it always get.

HCL: God damn you are right... it must be like that then. That is the most logical solution really because a compo vote is not a general scene history vote. Thanx for your splendid insight in this. How do I remove all my votes? Is there a easy way to do that?

Your answer is actually the onlyone I really agree with in a way. It will be much more easy for me that way too... please tell me if there is a way to remove all my votes easy! HCL ftw! Simple, less cycles and splendid thought!

Hehe.. of course there is no button for removing all your votes, this db was not designed for such actions ;). But you can do it manually on your voting history.

Professional advice:
Hold your compos in here, but do not rank by voting, but by criteria (e.g. the pic with the highest amount of penises wins) or have a jury to find out the winner. All happy, no voting needed, no tears, no cries.

have two different kinds of vote tables, one for voting "compos" and one for rating productions generally, mutually exclusive?

so on a sid/logo whatever csdb-compo, there is only a compo vote table - after deadline of compo is over, all compo votes will be calculated into a result table, compo vote table is removed and "general rating" table with zero votes is inserted, so production can be voted on again in respect to all other releases - outside of compo. or - have both tables in parallel present on the release page, which might confuse some people. just throwing ideas...

The voting system should be deleted. In the end it's nothing but a market mechanism which automatically leads to competitive behaviour.

There are some easy to use competition apps out there. The issue I guess is that they will never be part of CSDB scheme unless the elders of CSDB choose so, and it won't happen as CSDB is first considered to be a database. However, we all use CSDB as a forum and no one would use external voting app no matter how easy it would be to set up.

Anyway, voting is pointless. Most active CSDB sceners belong to a handful of groups and therefore vote as one would in a parlamentary democracy. :)

@Hein - I almost voted today - A near death experience for me. In a split second my point-finger were so close to be all in on the mouse-button but my brain got its act together and I released the finger before submitting...

@Mixer... yes... Database, but still a kind of scene hub... And now the compos will be decided by even fewer...

The point of non nerds are that when a compo enty enters a compo outside csdb it will be here instantly so it will just be overlay of sites instead of just having a small feature for that here! But I know, it is hard to setup and all.

The only reason for me to start this thread was simple fact that a compo is different than a general scene history vote - AND IN MY humble opinion the compos make the scene more active so it would be nice to have something for that! So you can slag me, say it is useless, that I am all lame for dearing to suggest this to you masters of the universe and all... Just really did suggest it to be nice!

I don't see anyone in this thread calling you lame. Your on/off switch with the drama and victim mode are quite easily triggered it seems. At times I wonder how you're able to survive in the adult world.

Why do you always say it is pointless and utter idiotic that I try to state what would be nice when I navigate between feedback like make it yourself and stop babbling and being pointless and then attacking me on personal level? I read feedback in here from fellow sceners wanting the same as I just suggest? You are a bit weird.

CSDb is a database. If anyone want to make compos they are as free to do so as they have always been, and should of course also make sure they have some kind of system to count the votes - cause that's not what CSDb is for.

And like i said [points upwards] just add a rule to any competition running here which says "all votes must be made in the comments". That means you could start a competition right now with no modifications made, the people working on the CSDb can concentrate on their already Herculean "to do" list and it even removes the frustration of anonymous up/downvoting into the bargain.

Problem solved, you're welcome [curtsey] and all cheques made payable to T.M.R Laboratories LLC please. =-)

Competitive behaviour is what drives the scene, after all.

To fix the voting system people have to vote *more*, it is that simple.

At this point "maybe" has more votes than anything else, but that was only me! And imagine teh scene dramas if that happened during a compo... [shudders and looks for somewhere to hide]

i can't see it standing up to anyone taking a serious pop at it though, at least not without needing a sign-up...

i still like the "vote in the comments" idea, it's harder to cheat in bulk even if people start using their fakelabel alter egos or something; maybe i'll get over my shyness/organisational ineptitude and run a little compo to see if it works...?
