CGTerm and BBS usage.
I'm having a blast on the BBS's so a big thanks to all that host them still but a couple of silly questions.
Using Cgterm 1.7b2, when it comes to the download of files I hit ESC, then t, then r and then p, the file comes down but I'm having to type in the file name each time.
I presume I'm doing something wrong?
Am I using the wrong protocol?
Although I don't mind the return to slow speed downloads is there a speed selection?
That's it, my two silly questions..
Thanks for any help.. |

You are not doing anything wrong. CGTerm does not support multi-punter (which handles downloading of multiple tagged files and grabs the filename automatically). So, you should (and obviously already do) use single-punter, which require you to download one file at a time and then name it manually.
CGTerm has no "speed setting", because it's the BBS in the other end that decides the speed, not CGTerm. CGTerm is not connected directly to the Commodore 64 running the BBS (unlike in the past, when your C64+modem was talking directly to the BBS C64+modem), but via a gateway of some sort (a PC acting as a gateway or a hardware serial to TCP/IP device).
Most boards run on 2400bps against the gateway for classic reasons (like Antidote does), but I could crank up the speed a lot since I have a Swiftlink attached. But I won't do that. :)
Edge Of Midnight used to run on 9600bps back in the days though, so there were exceptions even in the good old dial-up time.
I think it was Jucke who once coined the phrase; "The faster the data is downloaded, the less the data you download is worth". I think that is very thought-provoking... :)
I recommend you to head over to www.triad.se and click on "Antidote BBS" in the right pane. Some neat info there! |

Thanks taper...
Not worried about the speed to be honest, like the euphemism.
The name bit also didn't worry me I simply thought I had cocked up :)
Cheers again..
Antidote was where I was on re the names, nice little BBS you have there, love the hardware...
Takes me back to 300baud modems :) |

Thanks! :)
Please note that due to the Microsoft overtake of the no-ip domains, antidote.hopto.org does not currently resolve.
You can however reach the BBS via it's new adress antidote.triad.se:23 instead. |

So that explains why I couldn't log in yesterday. :)
Good to hear that you found another url to use. Just hoping that all the old users will find out... :P

I'm working on multi-punter support in the new version of CBMTerm (available for testing if anyone's interested, but not ready for full release)
However, there seem to be a handful of mutually incompatible variations on multi-punter. Anyone know of a comprehensive document describing the most common variant? |

@six: I'm not sure if there is such a thing as the most common variant. What I do know is that the source code for C*Base is available, in case that helps figuring out how to implement it. |

Frantic: The old adress works again too, but I'm thinking of promoting the new one in the future, but keeping both.
Six: I would love to help you test! Just throw me a mail when you feel like it. About documentation, I don't think there is any better than Mr.Punter's own - which suck. :) |
