Ultimate 2 built in sidplayer
Is this sidplayer using the c64 real sidchip, or is it software based? |

I don't have an Ultimate 2, but I did some research about this aspect some time ago. The sid player is a custom software emulation (part of the firmware) by Gideon, and it plays back on the audio output of the U2. |

no. the sid player has nothing to do with the sid emulation. |

You are both right. The SID player in the Ultimate is ordinary C64 software, runs on the C64, and uses the real SID chip. On the other hand, there's also a SID emulator in the Ultimate, that normally snoops on the bus at $d400, and therefore sees the same data as the real SID chip. This emulated SID is sending its output to the headphone connector on the Ultimate. So if, for instance, you have the old SID chip in your C64, you could configure the Ultimate to emulate the new SID chip, and select between them using an audio switch. The emulation isn't perfect, though. |
