The old luminance and games
Hi,
Old topic perhaps. But since every game developing company back in the days used to own old luminance C64:s to produce games, I really feel the warmth in the colors when using my early brown units. Sure, old luminance sucks when it comes to demos and newer games. But nearly every Ocean game look best with the oldest hardware. Well, almost all games not made by "sceners" look best on the oldest hardware.
It would have been nice to be able to switch between the luminance levels on the same computer. But since it's not a VIC-II revision thing (I believe), I guess it's more complicated than just a switch board between different chips?
Oh well.. |

Problem is that VICs do not only produce different luminance but also do 6566/67/69 need +12V whereas 8562/65 want +5 V.
So in theory what you want is possible but a little complicated.
You might consider buying a C64 reloaded offering you to adjust voltage via jumper and use all kinds of VIC-II. |

To my understanding it is first and foremost a VIC-II revision thing.
At least for PAL VIC-II, there are 6569s with both old (R1) and new lumas (all the rest). Not sure how it is with NTSC. So you can switch between early and late 6569 VIC-II without having to worry about the voltage. |

I'm not so sure that it's a VIC related thing. I did some testing on this a hole while ago, and found out it was more related to the board revision. I might remember it all wrong, since this test was done over 7 years ago.
Anyway, old luma is a must when playing e.g Shadow of the beast (a game developed for C64GS but with gfx done on a much older C64).. |

I'm not a hw expert but I'm wondering if it's possible to do some signal adjustment with a little hw between the c64's video output and the monitor - at least if you have a "new" vic (which is the case for most c64 versions anyway).
Maybe the hw gurus can elaborate on this (if such a solution is possible, what is needed for it, ...) |
