Much disturbing interlace, but the multiple-bitmap mover and double-color plasma at the end survived.

Would be great for another round up at this years Syntax from the creator for sure!

The quite liked the tune.
The Turn Disk part the photo real image was really impressive.
There was something about it that reminded of the Amiga HAM mode.

It watched this a long time ago...shortly after it was released. I just watched it again. I was blown away by the FPP multi scroller effect!!! Simply Splendid!!!!

the title resonates with me sooo much :)

finally someone is brave enough to try some more modern gfx techniques on c64. I personally don't give a fuck about the interlace mode being ugly. it's time that someone freaking tried environmental mapping. The thing is this kind of aproach opens way for improvements. People will eventually optimize these efeects until they eventually are implemented in higher and higher resolutions.

Some very good coding in this demo. Great job ALIH.

And yes I read the note too.

On the interlaced 4x4 mode: so I won't be using that again, I guess :). no matter :). I have a new idea for a chunky mode without it.

@kbuzi: I didn't have time to make an elephant model, and could not find one of the right number of dots. next time :)

@Testa: Yeah, I forgot to disable the space check. oops!

@Steppe: Soon, probably around xmas I'll clean it up for release. That's a long story in of itself :). Need to make the c64 side requiremens less... wierd first!

@hcl: Absolutely, as I mentioned in the scroller and the note, your dots are superior :). I only saw EoD a few days before the party - also, I didn't know how many cycles my own dots were, let alone yours :) (i can't count cycles for shit, and i can't read other people's code :)). Trurh be told, had I seen eod before i coded this, i probably wouldn't have bothered. But I don't think anyone would seriously claim otherwise!

I somehow really like it. The plasma & the turn disc pic are simply beautiful and I dig the unique style. It's not easy to do a good demo in this style even on PC, but ALIH pulled it off quite well I think.

Those fucked up renderings don't look as good in the emulator as in youtube (Oops,. ok I am gonna see it in the real thing as long as I get a new working transfer cable :P). The 3d dots are cool even if not as accurate as others. The plasma and rotozoomer cool. I like the sad music and the title of the demo :P

:( Those plotters are not at all faster than the ones in EoD, The duck with plain non-mirrored plotts is in fact slower than mine.. (59 vs 58 cycles/plott), the mirrored one seems exactly the same (45 cycles/plott). ALIH just uses *very* low accuracy in the calculations, low-end music and of course no sprites or other time-wasting design elements.

Sorry, did i sound like a bitch right now? ;).

Those vectors are.. different, but i like those HiresIFLI pictures :).

A lot of innovative approaches in this one, unfortunately the target machine is heavily overstrained with the given tasks.
I liked the relaxed music and also these Truecolor Trip pictures just look AMAZING. Why don't you publish that tool, alih? On the whole not a demo that'll make it into my diskbox of demo gems, but nothing to start laughing about either. Keep up innovating, and maybe next time leave away a bit of the flick0r horr0r. ;-)

WOW!! Thats all I can say mate! Anyone who says this sucks needs to tip back a few more and get in the spirit of things. No serious tho, the demo was good alot of great things in this. Now the graphics? Some of those screen are bit rough and I was actually wondering if it was emulator fucking up or if my eyes was just failing me over the years. I think thats the effect that Alih was going for AND achieved!

Gritty is pretty! Or should I say Shitty is pretty? Either way I found the demo to be most interesting to say the least!
The music doesn't fit the grittyness though.. Some SID breakcore and faster transitions would be more suitable

This demo really gives me mixed emotions! One the one hand, it is butt ugly (sorry) but on the other hand, there is some really, really good code in the bottom of it all!
With a bit of design, I think this could have been a top demo.
But I can understand that sometimes you run out of time/you simply don't feel like it/other circumstances come in way of doing all that final polish (I did read the note as well :D)
Still, I think I would have liked it better with a more traditional no-design approach (ie. black screen, effect in one of the traditional three-color-ramps etc.) than the utterly weird design and color-combinations.

Laugh at me, but I liked watching this on PC with Vice in 200% speed, on fullscreen 100 Hz CRT monitor. That's great for interlaced stuff and this demo has quite a lot of that. Even the music sounds still good in twice the speed.

To be perfectly clear, this is a great demo in its original speed nevertheless. Only the 3D stuff, while technically impressive, could be more beautiful... I'm hoping for a sequel, "Fuck the Scene, a little deeper" or something like that. :)

cool demo with nice effects, did i see a face in the plasma part right after the fuck the scene picture or did i smoke too much weed today?.. also the 'one nibble trick and look' for some of the plasmas is clever.. you can calculate a lot faster now and it looks cool too but why are some of the effects so slow (the vector cube)... almost forgot to say, the music is very good.. with a headphone i really forget every thing around me...

well i had fun watching this demo.. it seems the x2008 vibe is still going on

2 little notes.
before the demos starts i get a screen with grab..
when i hit space i get a cpu jam in vice.... (latest version)

A very nice, horrible little demo. I kind of like the interlaced stuff, love the music and didn't like any of the graphics save for the flip disk one, which feels fresh and converted. The sort of non-transitions, constant black background and the total refusal of any kind of design is kind of revolting, but I doubt the demo would have been existant in any other form. I get nausea and strong schizophrenic vibes by this, and I somehow can't help feeling like it is intentional. Can't understand why anybody haven't picked up the interlace hires/afli idea before? I have read the note. Nice work, ALiH.

Well, everyone's already said everything about the awfulness of the interlaced blocky mode and the equal awesomeness of the interlaced AFLI, so I'll leave it at that.

This demo is severely unpolished and full of bugs and glitches, but I just love the feeling of pure data that's emanating from it! I think alih is one of the most innovative C64 coders today, I love his style and I'm always glad to check out new stuff from him. The FLI + FPP part is excellent, as is the plasma. And of course people still read the notefiles, they're always a nice bonus with any release. :-)

Whats with the interlaced blocky effects? They look truly awfull - and I saw it on a real c64. What rescues it is the "Flip the disk" picture - looks like HAM interlaced mode on amiga. :)

I have read the note... watched this in emu.. I need to check this on normal C64 color monitor to be sure if all that 3d rotating stuff is still so ugly as in vice. The 3d math stuff would be probably fantastic even in such a weird mode if it was faster (on SCPU or something). With this slow movement it lacked the WOW factor for me (pun intended ;-).

The photorealistic PIC is probably the highlight of the demo. Music is a bit boring. Btw. I perfectly understand your feelings. I experienced similar difficulties with (technically) much worse demo done by us (Studio Style) in 1995 and I was really glad that I could at least make it work with all of the off-screen loader time kicked out because of some bug. I wasted whole night before the party without actually going to sleep at all. Demo is slow loading but it's out. And that's important. It's important to finish things and put them out. Throw away the pressure and rather move on with new stuff. That's what I reccomend you. This one isn't completely bad. It shows that you have some potential. Next time (if there will ever be next time) leave music and gfx on someone else while you concentrate coding. You seem to be very quite good at it.

I like it so far, yes the blocky things looks not so good on WinVice, have to check this also on the real thing, i did press Space in the "WOW!" part where the 3D Objects are, than the demo crashed, i guess i had to put the second part in the disk drive? I check this later, the music have some false notes ( Linus would say ;-) But i go like Zyron and say that this tune has false notes in a good way of it :D I give later a voting when i did see all stuff. Not bad work ALIH, send me a e-mail or contact me in ICQ, Jazzcat has my number!!! I can make a tune next time if you wish :-))

According to Alih those wicked lace modes look a lot better on a real machine, VICE seems to be a bit slow on them or something.

Also the routines run a lot faster than the previews I saw a few months ago, there you could only recognize thing running vice in Warp mode :)

Some visually interesting things going on there! The girl on the flip disk part is the closest to photorealism i've ever seen on a c64. And i'm not so sure i dislike the blocky effects, the colors make up for a lot - feels fresh.

The rest is rather nice, actually. I like the way those interlaced pictures work and the plasma is outrageous.

some concepts work,some others dont. this interlaced video mode does NOT work. i dont mind a bad design or long loading times but the flicker bugs in both of the plot parts are disturbing and should have been fixed. there are afew effects that are quite ok though. ah btw i read the note.
