I like this a lot.
The idea about the 136 colors arose by looking at Koala-paint & Blazing paddles.
How to mix 16 colors to “emulate” even more. The chessboard thing about PAL-blending or natural behavior of the new VIC (and I guess the old in some way).
Returning to old school pixel-techniques unleashed.
The alignment of lines producing new colors of equal luminance simply looked awkward on a steady set of emulation as used in the 90:ies-00:s. I mean they where just lines,
it simply had to be dithered, regardless the eventual moiré effect it caused on a “real” setup.

Just as Horizon made some experiences with ECI, JHM, Ratt, SIT and STE made the same in multicolored bitmap, amongst others.
I guess people had ideas about dithering styles to produces more cream of the cream and yes
it seems we all agree that 16 colors is just enough as long we tweak the combinations just a bit.
We got Interlace and tweaks about that which might have looked great on an old CRT, and
We got some several versions of xxx-FLI which made the pixels smaller and smarter :D

It is not new, it’s old, but it has become useful again. Clean fields, less in between dithering and sharp edges.
In addition, we have seen all alterations already. Clean cut non-antialiased versions or homemade artifact error-diffusions.
It’s an experiment. And it’s made by means one found.

The clown might look like an alphabetic combination none-the-less,
but the image is strong!

nice! so how are you doing this? are you pre-preparing mixed brushes for each of the 136 colours, then painting like they're individual colours?

somehow this 136 color pattern dither technique reminds me too much of the output produced by converters. i prefer less radical, more traditional dithering/shading.
