Technically a big wOOt! Algo likes to release rushed 'proof of concept' stuff though. I hope he gets off his lazy ass one day and shows us what he really can do when he goes all out. I want to give this guy a 10 someday, I really do.

and please next time reset the drive once the demo is over!

The demo was only meant to demonstrate the audio decompression. Pity I rushed it in time for release before I started my boring 9-5. Many sections could have been optimised further but was overlooked due to routine working somewhat. Byte based decompression was just a hack instead of reprogramming the thing to be more efficient. Quality can be improved much more

I really want to like this. But as much as I appreciate the technical achievement, the overall quality of the production doesn't do it for me. If you have a killer feature like that you need to make sure to present it properly...

Dane: I agree. _Awesome_ technically (2 min of unlooped samples... WHAT?!), but certainly not among the top 10.

Great technical achievement combined with horrific music and dated visuals. Hmm, that sums up some of my own additions to this database.

Great one - pushing the limits again. I wish I had a real C64 to run it. For stuff like this EMUs can simply no do justice...

Today I tried demo again with C-128 and 1541-II. I formatted the floppy in BASIC and transferred the image again. It worked as it should. I think the error before might be caused by broken floppy or the position of the moon. :) Nice stuff Algo! Maybe next time video decompression routine demo of old Amiga demo? ;)

I suggest you release v1.1 and try Krill's newest loader. I tested Krill's loader and it had some issues with some versions. The newest version worked with all my drives. Except the broken ones ofcourse.

@ Algorithm: that youtube vid is captured from a real c64, and it is indeed the capturing/encoding which screwed up here (gotta love digital video equipment). Lemming did a better capture: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gweMviVlDUU

Can anyone do me a favour and tell me whether or not the demo runs like it does on Hoxs64 on real hardware. Seen the youtube footage, severe sound issues there. Have spoken to Vedos and i have confirmed that the demo ends at that stage hence that part is not a streaming issue.. Yes i know i should use a real c64

@mixer. The routine can certainly have sample rate doubled (however this would have resulted in music twice as short) as well as the loader finding it harder to being able to catch up with the routine.

As the routine decompresses 4 bytes in one hit, (and using a single raster line or a bit more) in theory it can decompress around 60000 samples per second. An idea would be to decompress them to a sample buffer and let the sample nmi routine just read the bytes.
In the routine used in the demo, 4 bytes are read into the sample routine (once per 4 lines) and the 4th nmi routine then decodes the next 4 sample bytes (hardly not an optimum scenario) but less ram usage.

@vedos. I should have used the latest version of the krill loader (the demo uses version 58) Not sure why the screen stays black with the music continuing? the video routines etc do not rely on the streaming at all (and are all run via irq)

The non irq routine is responsible for loading the relevent file into the desired buffer. It is then on 'standby' until the nmi routine has exhausted the previous buffer and when it plays back the next buffer, it sends a signal to the main routine to load the data into the next buffer.

I assumed by streaming issues that the loader was not able to keep up with the sample playback on some drives.

Vedos, i had a look at the youtube clip. Does it stutter like that on your c64? the music should sound more smooth on a real c64 (or hoxs64 etc)

I tried the demo on my C-64C and C-128. I also tried 1541-II and Oceanic clone drive. With those setup I couldn't run the demo to the end.

Like Lemming said it has some kind of streaming issue. The screen turns black and music continues.

I talked with Krill and he said that you should use newer version of loader.

Like i've said I'm not coder, but I see that that the routines you've coded are top notch. :)

Keep on coding! Maybe the remake of Amiga demo next time? :)

Very nice! Do you think that the decoding/sampleplayrate could be doubled somehow?

This demo may have come fourth at En MaZZA Data 5, the organisers are however still uncertain.

sample quality is not the best maybe but streaming feature + demo effects rulez!

I've always loved samples and I have to say this is VERY VERY impressive even tho Lady Gaga is not really among my favorite performers ;-)

Some kinda of 'streaming issue' happens with a 1571 around the half-way but a 1541/1541-II goes all the way.

Really impressive demo. Nice to see that in 2011 there is still a lot to do with sampled music thanks smart code.
