I uploaded an improved/optimized version meanwhile:
**************************************
HermIRES 1.26
**************************************

However primarily developed on Linux, should run on Windows much better due to the used more up-to-date allegro library (v4.4).

I removed the Windows binary because it was built with the wrong allegro devpak and was not really Windows-friendly.
The 1.25 optimized+improved version is coming in some days...

Oh, I found what caused the Ctrl/Shift/Alt stuck in Win7: the used allegro devpak version was wrong! arghh...
I compiled it with a 4.4 devpak, and what a surprise :) it works well, so my source-code was correct, no need for extra Windows-specific key-settings in the source as I supposed...
I'll work on the other issue, to make CRT emulation faster. I'll rewrite it not to include 'blit' functions, but I'll try to emulate it by software in a faster way...
And of course, a few additions are coming based on people's ideas...

Hi. Good to hear it works in XP for you too...
BTW, I just had the chance to try on Win7, and for the moment Win7 sucks with HermIRES! Control key behaves strange - stays virtually 'ON' after pressed - and for me (maybe depending on some 'theme' settings) sometimes Win7 destroyed the app after a while if it was minimized in background...
As most of you probably use Win7 (assuming from download-numbers), I'll try to make HermIRES work well on Win7 too...
Until that you should use it in Linux or winXP...I'm curious how the OSX port will behave, hopefully better than the Windows-port... note, I develop&test it on Linux primarily, which seems to work well according to my experience and some feedbacks..
Coming soon with the more 'platform-specified' versions...

Brilliant! With this update it now works on my WinXP - both desktop and virtual (ie VMware) setups.

It wouldn't be hard, SPRedit uses the same allegro library and it was succesfully compiled on OSX by my SRA bandmate Werdy who is OSX user.
I just don't have an OSX on my machine (though I have a Mac Mini 2011 I prefer using the lightweight Lubuntu on it and unfortunately couldn't make a proper dual boot yet successfully).Maybe I'll try to translate for OSX in VBox...
If you set up a build-environment (g++ and allegro-dev) you can compile it easily I guess, but I'll work on installer packages for the 3 major platforms (MSI,DEB,DMG).

Any hope for a Mac release?

If you experience slowness it might be due to the CRT emulation which Windows seem to handle much slower than Linux (especially Win7 I guess)...I shouldn't have enabled it by default...
If you switch the CRT emulation OFF with 'CRT emul.' button, the program should work much faster...

Tried it out on my Thinkpad x41 with win7.
The result?
So slow it's utterly useless.

I'll try it on a little bit more powerful computer when I get back home.

A new HermIRES version...I made a lot of improvements and added new features. The most significant:
-auto-adjustment of GUI size after detecting desktop-resolution (please don't change resolution in Windows while using HerMIRES, it will probably hang by that.)
-PNG import and export (not just .bmp)
-improved selection and copy/paste/move mechanism
-[ ] keys can set pen-diameter ('PhotoShop' style :)
-Pen-diameter and Undo/Redo toolbar buttons can act as repetitive (useful on Windows where keys don't seem to repeat in allegro)
-CRT emulation to preview what will be seen on real TV set or C64 monitor (scanlines, PAL-blurring/smoothing)
(The CRT emulation might be slow on Windows according to my experience. You can turn it off, but above 12x magnification it's turned off automatically...)
-last used file opened automatically
-sliders to set brightness and CRT-blur
fixes:
-HermIRES.cfg is now saved into program's folder safely
-buttons are more responsive
-Palette buttons are colorized according to loaded .vpl file
-moving with middle-mouse-button follows better...
-pen-drawing is never aggregated from now...
