Hm, I think the background (in original the typewriting machine) is a bit poor, ruins the effect. I like your mixing, I like your melodies, I like your vibe. What I don't understand though is since EOD nearly all of your tunes sounds like extension of the soundtrack for that demo, and seem not to be willing to leave that comfort zone too much. 5+ years and counting....

The fact of submitting a cover for a compo would probably go away if you wouldn't win or take the 'box'. Decision is yours, but I'm seconding Magnar here.

@Magnar, regarding your suggestions on tune categorizations - I got your point but that's an overkill. We can't segregate code-tunes, music editor tunes, sample tunes and so on - at least not on big parties. It's killing the development. So even though I'm a big supporter of pure SID and no-cover tunes for compos, on parties like X or Datastorm I don't see it happening, and let's leave it. There are other parties, smaller parties like Forever or Silesia Party where covers and sampled tunes are not allowed, and they allow remote entries - use this occasion maybe, to compete in more puristic way. On Forever party you will additionaly be judged by ppl from ZX, Atari and CPC scenes. Even more, on those two mentioned parties (there are more I'm sure, but these two I know well) they also don't tell who's the author, so the public is voting for the tune, not the composer (mostly, unless you'll let everyone to listen to your tune beforehand and PR it ;] might work for a winning btw. hehe )

yours (both)

half a year later still one of the best tunes of the year, unbelievable it's NOT stereo nor sampled and not even multispeed if you consider the richness of the instruments achieved by filter use and mere being Danish, sometimes I wish i could vate 11 once a year in each category.

Finally, you got it =P

Seriously no one forces you to like it, I don't even know if the ppl meant you with downvoters, you are not anonymous and a 6 is no downvote, just a hater vote in this case ;)

When I saw the Demo "continuum", I search the .sid-file of this amazing sid.
I didn't find one, so I had to do it on my own ;-)

that's alright, true artists get away with playing the diva for a while, as soon as this is only temporary, you worked a lot recently and now deserved the right to sulk a while :)

As a musician I'm always interested in reviews. About the music, that is. The more detailed the better.

I suppose I had high hopes in that department when releasing Bitter Swede Sphony. Maybe I missed it, bur so far none of the recent diskmags or blogs have done more than state it was released. Hence the bitterness. :)

It's therefore both amusing and saddening to see that Valentine, a cover/remix that I churned out in two evenings as a favor for Ruk gets more spotlight. Suddenly all the media strategies of some of our more provocative popstars make sense.

Anyway, enough of that. I'll go be the misunderstood artist in a corner for a while and then I'll see you again later this year in another competition.

While not an appropriate place to discuss this (but as it already started here), I believe the discussion would be in a better direction if we talk about how much it is "right" to make covers and original compositions compete together, rather than discussing whether a compo that does not explicitly exclude covers should be "abused" in that way or not. Because, if we are there, then we could also say any compo that does not specifically exclude pre-released material, it means everybody is free to join the compos with already released material, again and again. Even better with material which already won some compo, if we stretch the example further. :-)

The tune on the other hand is quite nice. I did not know the original though, but it is definitely a nice SID.

It's a solid c64 Arrangement. I almost gave it a 10. But I think more variations in instruments and better sounds could have made this even better. Perhaps the Triad demo used all memory ?

@ those who don't like arrangements: If the competition rules doesn't specify any restrictions then everything is allowed. Right ?

@Theryk

You really seriously think about disqualifying such quality from competition?

Yes :) In my humble opinion it's just wrong. That's all ;) Anyways, Valentine is simply sidoulicious! Looping-worthy :P

You really seriously think about disqualifying such quality from competition? Man, wish we had your problems at BCC. :) @Dane: Feel free to send remote entry next year or attend BCC, you can compete with anything you like, even the Swedish national anthem in 16x speed stereo ;)

BTT
This is just awesome, uberquality tune and great match to the final screen of the Continuum demo. Love everything about it, melody, beat, filters... <3

Very catchy indeed! Especially, seeing all those karate guy moves in Triad's demo with it being played in the background, made me smile! :)

I've just never could understood how come people use the same gfx/msx when they compete as individuals in a certain compo. It not only spills the beans (author ˜– if it's nickname restricted), but spoils the whole enjoyment, when you have to see/listen to it again later on)

Artist's choice that is.

the original sounds like it was made after this version. I'd have preferred some more kicky drums, instead of the constant noise sweeps, even the original has it too. and what dane said about having himself alread prooven as a composer. :)

I'm thankful for the attention. This hopefully means more people will discover Wintergatan. And I am way past proving myself as a musician to people. For original compositions, try Bitter Swede Symphony or Revolved.

Killer cover! Never heard of Wintergatan. The original kinda reminded me of Detektivbyrån.

No wonder… :)

Love the sounds. Love the arrangement. I wish you composed it yourself.

No… actually, I'm glad you didn't :)

The problem with separate compos is how to separate the compos :) Where to draw the line of what should be considered a cover? Only with 1:1 100% conversions, or a tune clearly "inspired" by something, or a tune with borrowed elements.. etc. Same goes for digi-content. The most important thing is that you don't claim the fame for something you haven't done. Like this one.

On topic: Very nice and dane:ish tune! I <3 both Dane and Wintergatan (and Detektivbyrån for that matter) and here I get both. AAaand I detected the cover-warning-message and voted accordingly at the party ;)

Lovely tune!

I would also like to see separate digi-compos. Hate silly digi-songs with beating well-composed SIDs. Now digi-songs also *could* be well-composed, but often they get too much attention by just sounding silly.

bepp: of course there would be more entries if there actually was a cover compo, but you miss my point. A cover is not the actual musician's own composition. Same goes for wired images, or whatever people tend to call them. They can be made good, or bad, and you can work on them for hours or just hit a button in Project One, but how technically good they might be, they are still not the original work of one artist, and should not compete with original pieces of art.

And again: This tune is a bliss. I love it. It's not about that.

My point is that I find covers do not fit in a music compo for SID songs on C64. I also regret attending with a cover last year.

I would like the C64 Music competition to be divided into
1) Digi-songs
2) Non-digi standard 6581/8580 SID songs in various speeds (1x, 2x etc).

This would make it more fair as ordinary composers without coding skills of making their own digi-wizardy can compete against eachother in terms of using the song-editors available for download here on csdb. Like, Sid Duzz It, Goattracker, Cheesetracker etc.

Maybe this should be moved to forum :)

Speaking as someone who generally hates covers in music compos I thought this one was very fair. Marked as such and all, and a really good version at that. In what way were the voters deceived? I think everyone needs to take more responsibility for how they vote in general.

Guess then Magnar would have won the "SID cover" compo of DS 2013 (which only had one entry) and Dane would have won the same this year (only entry there too).

You *really* think it's a good idea? Are you suggesting covers have an advantage against original compositions, or why split them? Why did the only cover from last year end up #13? O_o

Submitted by hedning on 19 February 2014
Bepp: Making a cover and making a original composition is two very different things. Not that I hate covers. I love this one for example, but it's only fair to compete with it against other covers of the same original tune.

Fair? What would be more fair? Ending up as #13 or #1 with a cover? I think there's a reason why we don't see many covers nowadays... ;-)

Well, consider the Datastorm Amiga Music compo had several different categories (Tracked, Chip, Executable), why do it differently for C64?

I suggest a compo for digi's and sid's. And I would also prefer it to be original works only.

Would make things a lot more fair imo.

Magnar, if it's not in the rules, it's not in the rules..
One could moan about digi's too..

Some people I know did offline, it being an unwritten rule that compo's should be sid only..

That would exclude Mahoney's awesome work too.. Should it also not have competed?

Our work is ALWAYS hard work, it's audio on c64 :)

As long as there are no remote entries on parties, and we're competing by showing up.. imho nothing is lame, not even if it turns into a cover fest, a song made in basic, someone plays their first work, or someone making SAM basic sing a new song, Just to name some options that would run on a stock machine

Magervalp, I know the rules and was also why I delivered the cover last year because I found it a bit funny. However, after talking to people and understand their mixed feelings about it, I quickly realized that it was a mistake. That a music compo full of covers would be no fun, but lame. That covers doesn't really serve a purpose in a music competition. I can understand the use of a cover in a demo with visuals that goes with it etc. But in the music compo, musicians should deliver their own original works, not covers. My own summary of it, and maybe others agree or not. I would advice to update the rules for this in future parties to avoid a full set of covers being handed in instead of original works.

PS! Edit post feature would be nice.. Why disabled?

And just to be perfectly clear, there was no rule against covers in the compo. The credits for the composition are crystal clear, and it was voted the winner by a *wide* margin.

Dramaz! Downvoted by teh anon cowards... Anyway, we in TRIAD loved this tune and we're really proud to have it exclusively made for our demo. Can't help that Stellan was so trigger happy he had to release it before we did ;-)

I learned my lesson very well last year by introducing the remix of "Jag Kommer" into the compo. Will never again do that. :) I guess, even though it is hard work to make a good cover, that the unwritten rule in demo compos are that it should be your original work, and not a cover/remix. I found out that the hard way too ;)
