Then you failed. It clearly sounds like *10* voices. Must downvote.

That was uncalled for! I went for 12 voices !1 :)

Amazing, awesome, and all that I said already at x :)

Just dropped in to throw in my 10 points into the bucket, and csdb vote on all 27 tunes.

That said, reading the comments just wanted to comment this side note.. I remember a few years back thinking how fucked everyone would be if Linus would set his sound design skills to a slightly more poppy/catchy mainstream taste tune in compo's.. (don't get me wrong, I love the niche in a niche sids you guys have going on the last years) but voila.. number one..

I hate and love all of you guys (writing comments) at the same time! :)

But hell.. batteries recharged at X and I'm seeing this sid scene as the formula one now.. give me a damn seat in the back of the field and at least I'll be able to tell people that I raced amongst gods even though they lapped me 20 times per race :)

Damn.. seriously regret not having an entry for x.. won't happen again :)

Keep pumping out tracks like this!!! :)

"between the tune I mentioned and this one I can't think of any tunes pretending digi/synth/samples via tracker."

:o

most notably, Jammer's "Hot Mommas", "HVSC" and "Mr. Marvellous".
Conrad's "Badger Mushroom Snake".
Hein's "Transform" (although i'm not sure if that speech attempt was officially released).
then, my own humble "Bored Teenagers", "Unintelligible Disco" and "Sweet Infection".
and some i managed to forget.

@Psycho, comments compo arrrr!!! \o/

So, speech synth, it has this wow factor the quality very much resembles SAM digi so yeah, but on the other hand, it doesn't surpass it, so it's OK. There's a lot of work involved in it but again, I'm wating for the time when we'll get something which will resemble human voice much more ;) And to be fair we musicans have now code driving methods speeding up on this subject, so we better start using these brains or we'll be far behind sonner than expected ;-)

@Jammer between the tune I mentioned and this one I can't think of any tunes pretending digi/synth/samples via tracker.
@Conrad Why the fuzz: for zeee raztertime!

There're not too many c64 tunes that impress me, but this one does. Great job, Linus.

You kidding? =) Ranting and asslicking under #1 compo releases are the best PR drivers ever! And even if I'd do no release or all crap in my life there's still a chance someone will remember me for this week \o/

@Conrad: Funny, I think I said basically the same to Spider on PM :D

and what Jammer not said :)
User Comment
Submitted by Conrad on 4 November 2014
I honestly don't get all this hyper over the speech stuff, because even though it is there, it makes no sense to me what it is trying to say. I applaud the tune mainly for the bassline/arp and lead work... the "chinka-chinka" effect is just an extra.
User Comment
Submitted by Jammer on 4 November 2014
TheRyk, you've missed couple of tunes inbetween then ;)
User Comment
Submitted by TheRyk on 4 November 2014
what spider sez, though there were a bunch of winner candidates who all deserved #1, this one was most impressive from a coder's perspective, so including 1 respect point also must be voted 10. long time since Agemixer's Freestyler :)

Two channels are enough for most of interesting effects ;) You're overreacting as always ;)
User Comment
Submitted by booker on 3 November 2014
it implicates the snare on three voices is cooler than snare on two voices, which is cooler than a snare on a one voice :)
User Comment
Submitted by CreaMD on 3 November 2014
@booker, and that implicates what?
User Comment
Submitted by booker on 3 November 2014
@Spider, @Creamd - Mr Linus been succesfull in using all three voices for snares, if you haven't notice earlier ;)

Submitted by Linus on 3 November 2014
In that case, dear Werner, I would have been fucked! ;) I was the guy who kept screaming for a range of 1-5, btw.

@spider, the dual voice chords got a bit larger application than a single beat, you can check VN 57 intro tune for example. No need to rip with siddump, tune source included.

I thought I had commented on this already, but no... I have told you I love your sounds, even the tunes that I don't "get" always put a smile on my face. This one is an instant crowd pleaser, awesome stuff! One of my top-3 at X, certainly. It was great talking to you at the party, I hope it won't be another 4 years until next time.

Jammer, Spider, ... yeah drum in two channels is one of my most favourite tricks ;)
User Comment
Submitted by Stinsen on 31 October 2014
The WTF factor (in the positive sense that is) was really high with this one at the party, that speech is really crisp and the beat is wicked. :D

spider-j: Welcome to the secret society of musicians using advanced tricks then ;)

Submitted by spider-j on 31 October 2014
After analysing with siddump I have to add that besides the speech synthesis the rest is also very clever arranged. Especially kick drum on two channels is a very good idea for party crowd impressing. And using two channels for real power chords instead of arps also rocks hard (of course only works in that offbeat style). In the parts where you even have that unfiltered bass on third voice you actually use all three voices for stuff people often try to fit into one voice - your approach makes it extremely 'phat'. So thank you, I learned much and got new inspiration!

Submitted by Hate Bush on 30 October 2014
even if it was played somewhere in the middle, preceded by a discouraging introduction and faded out halfway - it would still win. a perfect partykiller. brilliant technique (note: no arpeggios) and THIS GROOVE! /o\

Submitted by Linus on 29 October 2014
I was talking about the technical approach. I think Agemixer used ringmod instead.
User Comment
Submitted by Jammer on 29 October 2014
You basically need two channels - first for pitch (carrier) and second for formant (modulator). Linus either extended the sound of carrier or double sync-modulated the speech ;)
User Comment
Submitted by ilesj on 29 October 2014
I simply love this speech synthesis thingie in chip music! And yeah, I was thinking exactly what Conrad pointed out. Agemixer has been doing this stuff in 2002-2004. Not to underrate Linus' tune at all - it's great one and a worthy winner! The speech is very clear and understandable in this one, great work. Is it the first time all three channels are used for the speech simulation?

Awesome track, and a well deserved winner.

Nice talking to you, guess the somewhat loud bass didn't turn out to be that big of a problem :)

All hail The Jammer because he is the one who really developed this kind of approach to speech synth long time ago.

Pants would sooner be shat :P But I hope it's You who will prove me wrong ;)
User Comment

Well, Jammer, I only said it can be done better. And I'm so clever, because... you will prove me right :)
User Comment
Submitted by Jammer on 29 October 2014
Ok, time for a compo who's going to do better and more comprehensible speech synthesis in regular editor with 1x speed ;) You, guys, are so clever ;)
User Comment
Submitted by BokanoiD on 28 October 2014
Heh, I fucking love this tune. It probably would've won the compo even without the speech synthesis, which is indeed impressive, but not very listenable IMHO.
User Comment
Submitted by Linus on 28 October 2014
Thanks, guys!

Dr. J: There are no digis involved at all, just pure sid programming in single speed - that is actually the technical main attraction here ;)
User Comment
Submitted by Dr.j on 28 October 2014
c64 forever with this fabelous tune 10/10 Linus ! just little thing which i think
that the digi speech (which is a very cool idea as general) don't sound very quality and i would maybe cut it from the tune or release another tune without the speech. but again : A worthing winning tune and excellent execution
User Comment
Submitted by booker on 28 October 2014
I've heard only one tune before the compo and it was Linus's. Guys have seen me dancing like an idiot but only I knew it will be a winner :) If I would do it - I would do every note exactly the same. Maybe the pick on JT lead theme sounds too rushed and you could spend few hours more at the party to polish it (btw. I always have a mini midi keyboard with me ;P ) but who cares! :) The spech synth can be done better (with the music editor and 1 frame) but what's more important (to me) is you continue to develop "the waterless" approach above dual tone, and this is one of the main developments to notice. Besides that, the groove and all is just fucking cool :D 11/10

speech synthesis in a tracker \o/ + a nice straight-forward 4/4 earpleasing, pop-like composition. Deserved winner!

Just one more word left untold - Respect!
User Comment
Submitted by Linus on 26 October 2014
Oh dear Fanti, *if* there is a way to make it better in single speed without using samples I certainly wanna hear it :) Also, I would have prefered you to get fucked, too. Where have you been, man? Missed you. Hugs :)
User Comment
Submitted by Fanta on 26 October 2014
can i downvote this please? nah, my fav from the compo. finally you made it, well deserved. catchy in every way, slick sounddesign and some non-usual moments made this an instant winner - and randall got fucked, yeah! ;-P

if i may pick a downside... i didn't recognize the speech synth to actually say something until someone wrote about it. so... next time do it better dude. :-D :-* "ever" is more or less swallowed...

Not fan of uncomprehensible speech-like effects (coz everyone uses them and I don't coz coudln't get my ass to learn the technique of course.. ;) but the luxurious fat beat and clever arrange makes this tune a worth relistening.
