Yes, because of in game cheat.
Use keyboard to choose trainer if you want
to play without.
No 3rd Version coming, for sure.

More senseless like this here was.

This is just because holding Joystick #2 Right when the main code of the preview starts activates the built in cheat mode (unlimited lives). :D

Sorry, but the problem is still there.

When you push the keys N and N on the trainer menu, the trainers are correctly off.

But when you push RIGHT and RIGHT on the trainer menu (meaning NO and NO), you still get unlimited lives...
