It's due to a "bug" in the Cruelcrunch 2.2 preamble code. See also Wicked
080D  A2 FF     LDX #$FF
080F  78        SEI
0810  9A        TXS
0811  D8        CLD
0812  20 A3 FD  JSR $FDA3 ;
0815 20 50 FD JSR $FD50 ;<< this will corrupt the crunched data if the
                              crunched prg goes over $a000, because $a000 is
                              trashed with $55 after the RAM-test finishes
0818 20 15 FD JSR $FD15 ;<< if there are data at $fd30-fd4f, forget about
                              those bytes aswell, but it's not the case here =)
081B  20 5B FF  JSR $FF5B ;   FIX: just nop those 2 JSRs

Please note that's possible the crackers never noticed this because they were
using EXOS or SpeedDos kernals, those have a different RAM-test that doesn't
trash byte at $a000, aswell as a non-destructive $fd15 vector reset routine.
