DRAX: Agreed ;) I love Your tunes in vein of this, Caught In The Middle, Clarence, Empty Spaces, KickAssembler Easteregg etc. ;) Less fond of those 'Bavarian' ones :D

I had a re-listen to this tune the other day and was surprised how much emotional atmosphere there is in it and how precise it reflected the overall feeling I had at the time I composed it... and for some reason it gets better the more I hear it... Not my most well known tune but one of the tunes that I am most proud of because it is pretty simple and honest... it reflects so many different feelings - it is as if the emotions shift everytime there is a new chord...

Seems some have missed Geir's excellent "Echoes" which first featured the echo fx.

Thanks for the feedback, guys ;) ... Lax: Geir and I thought that you deserved a credit for the player :D

I actually like the one without the echo, if that is the one that is higher in volume in vise... The one that plays the loudest is the coolest for me... it is more edgy and clearer and holds more contrasts and I love that.

Nice one, Tom.. Why am I credited for code by the way?..

Nice work Thomas :) I'm always impressed by your solos-work.

Although some newskool sounds wouldn't hurt :))

btw. what version of 6581 do you use with Vice?

I really like stuff like this. The basics are fairly simple. Focus has been put into making something catchy and moody, alltogether with a perfect amount of expression.
I have actually been humming the melody parts all day at work today. :-)
Also Geir's echo works really good in this tune.

@groepaz

osc3 ? now i'm really confused ;) the echo included the bass and the lead; that would mean channel 3 is a faked bass/leadsplit channel?

@clearance
thank you !

Brilliant tune! And no worries Drax, the tune is long enough. It just makes you wanna listen to it again and again from the start.

pvcf: the echo routine doesn't work the way it should be with vice+hardsid, in fact Vice's software emulation is better in this special case. Real hw+6581 is the best as always. I know, bcoz I tried all 3 methods. :)

syndrom/pvcf: check Echoes ... for short: the echo is generated by a routine running in nmi, which samples osc3 and plays it back (as a sample through $d418) with some delay.

@drax

thanx for explaining it! correct, i have a new sid with digiboost. what for a echoroutine is this that this digiboost can have a influence? its very intresting (also it sounds very intresting). first i thought about something ringmod but the echo is too "clear", to exact like the original voices. later i thought its only a fake, (splitted bass/lead with minor volume and small delay in third channel), but that would not explain your comment about the digiboost which influence the volume of the echo^^ and the big amount of eaten rastertime for the echoeffect... so, how it works ? 8)

Quote:
8580 digiboost is 20% louder than 6581 digi

? sure? currently i use a hardsid, but back in time the loudness dependet at the resistor which we have builded in.
i currently work on some new stuff, even with diggis and i'm relatively sure that the hardsid digiboost is right at the same volume like the old sid and the sidemulators in vice, sidplay, ccs64 and hoxs64 (ok, i didnt check if the emulators all use the same sid emulation routines, i just cross-checked the sid+digi track at much platforms that i have).
beside this: the echo effect of your tune on new sid with digiboost IS louder than on old sid. so i'm really confused ^^

how exactly does this echo-effect work ? is it done by code ? nice tune, thomas - keep'em coming... ;-)

I could stab somebody with the hair on my arms right now. Massive goosebumps equ 10/10!

Edit: And what's the trick here? I swear I hear hear 4 voices. Then again I'm a SID newb and know almost nothing about it, is this hard to pull off?

Awesome little tune. Its simplicity is its power. I don't feel any need for anything else. Feels like the good old times when everything was about music content and style. So much heart in it.

I'm the same way impressed of Geir's superb echo code and the simple and clever visual SID synchron wave effect. Nice release, to and fro. C'grats, folks!

Thanks for the comments and feedback - means alot. Yazoo, I am glad you like the lead ;) ... Not aware of using drums in this tune though ;)- but I might have an idea of what you're referring to ... The arrangement of it is supposed to be very simple - I will suspect that a more elaborated arrangement would ruin the simplicity of it and also distract the focus from the lead too much... My only regret right now is that I didn't make the tune longer :)

i really love the lead in this 10/10 for that. and respect to geir. but the rest is so-so for me (drums, bass)

Definately a background music for a level instead of Hiscore...I like the solo very much!
Gimme gimme more please ;>

Geir's echo is emphasized with this tune better than I've ever heard before, and really awesome. First I was wondering how you can make bass+arp+echoed solo at the same time, then saw the trick in the comments :) Cooooool...

Lovely melody and lead that work really good with the echo fx.

Great to hear Thomas's atmospheric side again, breaking through his familiar (but great) Drax-Funk routine.

Really fantastic tune Drax, and a shame we didn't get to use it. I agree it would have really been great to use towards the end of the game (Maybe the last level).

A shame I did not hear this tune. I thought it was good today :). I would have probably used it for the game's loading music, but didn't know about this track :)

Thanks for all the positive feedback.

PVCF:
A 8580 with digiboost is totally forbidden, and will not give you the correct experience of the tune. 8580 digiboost is 20% louder than 6581 digi, hence making the what you call "bassline too loud". 8580 should not be used, either emulated or real. And VICE 1.9 and below is totally forbidden too. The best playback is a real C-64 with 6581 chip (good old), or VICE 2.1 with SID model 6581.

This is a cool composition. It certainly is fitting for a game. This fits more for a game level (toward the end levels), rather than as highscore music. This is too powerful for a highscore screen.

tested the song also on a new sid, it have a better filter (fat sounding^^) but the echo of the bassvoice is a little bit to loud. on old sid the echoeffect is boring by comparison to the new sid, also the bassvoice.

but i like the tune, nice melodie and nice rythm 8)

This tune was originally composed for the game Sub Hunter as a highscore tune but for reason I didn't like it back then... press 1 for restart and space for switching echo-effect on/off... A big thanks to Geir for the excellent echo-routine and this screen ;)
