@sander: Dano pointed this out, and said that it was Mirage 's invention :)

@Trident, I'm glad, and Mirage in particular, you noticed :)

this demo uses a ghostbyte trick that is extremely subtle and extremely cool, but easy to miss just because it is so subtle:

in the lower border, underneath the sprite scroll, there ghostbyte is split with a single-cycle split. that is, the ghostbyte appears as 8 black pixels - which should be impossible to produce.

normally, the ghostbyte is set using one of the sta/stx/sty instructions, which take 4 cycles each. this means that, if you set the ghostbyte in the middle of the screen, and then clear it as quickly as you can, you will see 4 repetitions of the same ghostbyte pattern. to achieve a single-byte / single-cycle 8-pixel wide ghostbyte pattern, you need to cover 3 of those 4 repetitions with sprites or with the border.

but in this demo, there is a 8-pixel wide ghostbyte split, in the middle of the screen (no way near the borders), and all sprites are already used by the scroll. impossible!

very cool, very clever, and very subtle!

Ian, does this make Hein a babyboomer?

Simple, look up for Baby Boom, it's just statistics
"A period of more than two million annual births from 1971 to 1974, with the number of births in 1973 peaking at 2.09 million"

Can't some scientist explain why so many 50th birthdays in the C64 scene are within a few weeks?

And of course, Happy Birthday to all of you.

Happy B'day!

Having no idea what Hein looks like in 2023, i assume the PETSCII offers some idea.
When i first laid eye's on the said PETSCII, i saw Victor Ziegler from Kubrick's Eyes Wide Shut
