The "new" graphics mode was born first as a mode which would enable new kind of transition effects to demos. When testing this mode with special converter, it was evident that the pics looked much better to the eye than normal hires pictures. It seems that the human eye cannot see the leaning color blocks as easily as normal straight ones, so this zigzag pattern could be called as "psychovisual filtering" in a sense :)
