The pattern lengths remind me of the cicada principle. Every combination of primes (or values without a common denominator as in your case) should do the trick... | User Comment Submitted by ilesj on 14 March 2014
I was expecting entries with this concept to the compo, so props for that! I'm a huge fan of Fanta's 'Random 2' which, AFAIK, is made in the same way. This tune is a bit too abstract for me, but also gets repetitive to listen despite the pattern 'disalign'. | User Comment Submitted by spider-j on 18 February 2014
Okay, after doing my own attempt with that concept I came back and voted 9. While the tune itself may be not that interesting for many, it has fullfilled one very important criterion to me: It made such an impact on me, that I felt motivated and inspired to get creative myself.
To me this is very important in the scene. To create stuff that others are inspired or challenged to do better/different.
Thank you for that impulse! | User Comment Submitted by 1BM on 18 February 2014
i checked all the different combinations, 4/5/7 seems ideal to me, this takes 140 "pattern cycles" to repeat itself. of course you could take lengths like 11 (prime numbers work good) aswell, but that is even tougher to compose. | User Comment Submitted by Zirias on 18 February 2014
Cool idea indeed (and much closer to the "hold and modify" minimal-music concept I first had in mind myself). To be entertaining for a longer time period, the obvious idea would be "even more interchangeable patterns" ;) | User Comment Submitted by 1BM on 17 February 2014
spider, it looks like this, all patterns standard length:
CH1 pat1|pat1|pat2|pat2|rep
CH2 pat3|pat4|pat5|pat6|pat7|rep
CH3 pat8|pat9|pata|patb|patc|patd|pate|rep
it's a bit of a challenge since all patterns should fit together, sometimes unexpected variations can happen after a long time. maybe i'll create another version which puts more action on the third voice. | User Comment Submitted by spider-j on 17 February 2014
Very cool concept! Gotta try sth. with this concept too. At first listening I'd say you made the patterns a little too easy so that they all work together. I assume some more complex stuff could be composed this way. But gotta try myself to judge the difficulty.
I didn't really get what you mean by 4x in your explanation. Would be cool if you could share your source.
I think this concept would be great for a whole other competition.
Don't know what to vote; the idea is really exciting, the actual tune is imho a bit monotonous. Anyways: thumbs up! | User Comment Submitted by cadaver on 17 February 2014
Could fit a semi-melancholy martial arts adventure game in style of Fist II. Filtered bass is nicely relaxed. For me, would need second lead instrument or more clear variations to stay interesting for extended period of time. | User Comment Submitted by 1BM on 16 February 2014
yea this is not a perfect tune from a classic "tune" viewpoint, i more wanted to take the challenge from the "create a tune you can listen for one hour straight" approach, since this seems to be the core of the compo, so there is not much happening. it is more or less an audio pattern to have in the background, also composition was rather quick and minimal. it should be the musical equivalent of a "zoner" - always challenging the ear a little, but never too much and at the same time not getting boring. | User Comment Submitted by Shine on 16 February 2014 User Comment Submitted by 1BM on 16 February 2014
again a song with varied pattern repetition, that is 4 / 5 / 7. this means the 4x pattern has to be repeated 35 times to be played with all combinations of the other two tracks. that means the song is at least 11 minutes long - but composed by just a few patterns, ever varying with subtle changes. |
