This tool here is much more useful: Quick Dir 1541
Doesn't do the same, but really improves something :-)
Useful for large directory's

Jokes in computing are great but can be misplaced like this one, it sounds like a really nice tool but yet it slows down disks and the only way to "get it" is to go read another site...Bit sloppy an idea..

Yes, this IS meant as a joke ... but indeed, makes you instantly think of an actually "useful" defrag tool (with standard interleave, maybe configurable). Well, much easier to do on a PC using D64 images, but still, doing it on real hardware might be fun.

Yes, the author himself does acknowledge that the program is designed for looks, and would make disks slower - cf. the section "Desired Allocation" on the web page, where he also points out that implementing interleave would make for a better final file layout.

Of course, if one was to implement interleave, one could also display the blocks onscreen in interleaved order, so as to retain the pleasant appearance :)

you could of course just read the article on the website, where he mentions all this =P

Maybe the author meant this stuff like some kind of joke :) Or - there is again that problem of nowadays - many coders don´t know how stuffs works, they only know how to code - without knowing the background of the problem.. It could only show boxes and in fact does nothing and not harm the diskette :) Then it will be cool joke! ;)

1. Loading from 1541 disk is not fastest when loading sectors next to each other. Fastloaders usually prefer interleave of 8 or 10.
2. File search times is another issue. That's why directory is stored on middle track 18 to make the way the head needs to move to the data track after reading the directory entry as short as possible.

This is no criticism about the tool itself. Using a disk over and over again with different files may lead to fragmentation. The optimization is just not fitting to how 1541 drives work.

Wow, Winner in Category: Best useless tool 2018. Funny nonetheless to see a disk defragmenter for C64, even if it only makes loading worse =)
