Main routine and converter was done in just few days, I was mostly waiting for Hammerfirst to finish the picture. I could spend that time on trying to one-file it, but I was working on another production at the same time.

Golara: No extra download. Add a new release.

I managed to scroll this bitmap at a constant 1 pixel per frame instead of doing 25fps and a cosine. I also wanted to add option to disable vsp in case you've got bad c64, I'll add extra download when it's ready.

Nice release!

About the scroller: yes, scrolling two pixels at a time @ 25 fps really feels like jerky movement.
In the youtube world sub 50/60 Hz is the norm, even broadcast TV is below that nowadays in many cases.
In the old days anything less than 50/60 was considered glitchy.

Anyway, it should be easy to fix for a design like this by moving the sprite x-positions a single pixel back and forth every other frame.

@Magnar: just ran it on real hardware - both C64 and C64C with Pi1541 and a JVC 16:9 CRT - and, for me at least, it's rougher on the eyes there than in VICE, the scroller in particular.

Love the graphics, music and sentiment, can't read the text for fear of getting a headache. =-(

(The mask over the scroller on the left seems to be mangled on real hardware as well for some reason...?)

About the jerkyness; please run it on a real hardware, and you will see that Vice is the issue. I noticed vice having jerky vsp when things gets complicated, and doing a fli picture with vsp is just too complex for vice to keep up the correct framerate and display. As for the scroller, it also runs smooth on real hardware. But suffers of vice being an emulator not able to catch up... also the song sounds different in sidplay, goattracker vs vice in this release. So...
1-0 to 1982vs2018ish hardware

What a great tribute. As a big fan of Marvel (and DC) this is really a charming release.

Quote:
Real fun challenge would be to make it single file. In fact, both images and code to scroll are a single load, if not for the intro screen maybe I'd try to crunch it into one file.

this :) Actually, I don't see why this one is not single-filed.

Otherwise nice tribute

Nice work!

Re: what Ian’s saying, i’d say that using a sine-wave at 25fps looks more “choppy” than using a fixed speed because it’s more apparent at 25fps that you’re not getting the subpixel scroll - eg if you imagine a point where the sine means the pic is scrolling at 1.5 pixels per frame, you’ll scroll 1 pixel one frame and 2 pixels the next - this will definitely create “chop” at 25fps. At 50fps it will still be visible but less apparent.

Great demo though, nice work for a worthy subject :-)

RIP Stan.

I just say what I see, for _ME_ the text scroll it's jerky, and the pic scroller isn't much better.

Would you call 25 fps scrolling extremely jerky ? :D The routine can do 50 FPS scroll of the image, but Hammerfirst wanted it a bit slower

every second frame, ok, then it's intended.

Ian: Picture and text are scrolled every second frame. I don't know if you are talking about that or other problem. I Tried it on Vice 3.1 and C64 debugger (vice 3.1 inside too I think)

This demo uses loader by LFT. Sorry, forgot to mention that anywhere in the production :( NON-VSP version will follow soon in case you've got VSP crashing C64 (And I'll probably add LFT to the credits then)
