during the compo the FLESCOS pictures were messed up - a sprite column was missing on every single one of them. was this a bug in the demo? or maybe FLESCOS was triggering some yet undiscovered flakiness in the vic chip? or something else? everything had worked fine on every machine that we had tested it on, including the compo machine, so we were at a loss as to what could be the issue.

we were speculating around temperature effects and other similar long-shots that none of us really thought sounded plausible.

then someone from the organizing team (i don't know who) cracked the case: the crt screen in the control room, which was connected with s-video to the compo machine, was showing the FLESCOS pictures correctly at the same time the big screen was showing the bugged version.

the difference between the two was that the big screen was connected via an additional chip that sits between the motherboard of the compo machine and the vic chip and that outputs a signal to the big screen. the FLESCOS pictures seems to have triggered a bug inside this device!

so the demo was fine. the problem was with the connection to the big screen. but this gave us all a bit of excitement during and after the compo as we were trying to cope with / understand the issue.
