I wish Jakub Szefer aka SFR would have attended the compo.

Hail to the winner! :)

Congrats, Lft! Your tune is indeed awesome!

Apart from that I think it's a shame that only 7 people seem to have voted using the (cumbersome) external form.

Also in my opinion Mermaid should have been placed much higher, because she had the best entries. And three of them, wherever she finds time to be so productive. ;)

Nice work everyone, and thanks for organising JEFF.

I'm pretty happy with last place TBH, the field was astoundingly good and I *still* managed a CSDb score of 7 in that context :D

Congrats, Lft! Your entry was my number one, too. Well deserved.

Brilliant competition. Well done LFT, that was my pick for the top spot, so a very satisfying result. Hope this competition will run again in future as it is truly inspiring.

When will the results be posted?

User Comment
Submitted by freℚvibez on 14 March 2016
So did I. And I also voted for the tunes in the context of their success of meeting and improving upon the compo theme - that is having an interesting (and maybe unortodox/unexpected) approach to time signatures; and not only their overall "likability" or even the sole expressiveness of their sounds.

I for myself tried to pack the 5/4 signature (and 10/8 if you are strict) in a subtle way into the beat so that the listener doesn't even have to notice it while grooving along.. So it just feels a bit different. ;)

Submitted by Mermaid on 14 March 2016
Karmic: I'm afraid I've ruined your plans by giving 1 to both disqualified tunes - since I wasn't sure what to do about them.

User Comment
Submitted by Karmic on 14 March 2016
I planned to also release the scores of the disqualified tunes to see what score they would've got if they didn't break the rules.

So don't worry, they won't be counted in the official compo results :)

I'm trying to fill out the vote sheet, but so far I've run into two tunes that aren't actually in the compo: Bird Beak (too short) and Go Easy On (4/4 tempo). What should I do? Will the votes for those 2 tunes be ignored?

Submitted by freℚvibez on 8 March 2016
Oh, I also thought the deadline would be tonight midnight like with the other compos. Guess I have to release my tune outside of the compo.

User Comment
Submitted by ChristopherJam on 8 March 2016
Oh wait, the deadline was this morning? I was hoping to complete my entry this afternoon.

Happy either way (I really should have asked for an time of day/timezone earlier), but a clarification would be good so I can work out whether to continue working over the next few hours or just do an "out of compo" release in a few days.

User Comment
Submitted by Jammer on 8 March 2016
Not that I nitpick or sth but shouldn't the compo be over today but right before midnight? ;)

User Comment
Submitted by Linus on 31 January 2016
Half way done with my first entry .

User Comment
Submitted by Hein on 28 January 2016
I'm tempted, will try some 9/8 funk or so. 5/4 is maybe a bit less awkward. Ohwell.

User Comment
Submitted by Rock on 26 January 2016
hmmm... interesting....

User Comment
Submitted by Karmic on 26 January 2016
Linus: Alright, I retract that statement. :)

User Comment
Submitted by Linus on 26 January 2016
Karmic, imho that doesn't make much sense as the listener can interpret a time signature in different ways.

E.g., is it 7/4 + 7/4 + 3/4 or 17/8? =D Also, what about polyrhythms? Voice 1 plays a melody in 9/8 while voice 2 runs a straight 4/4 beat. Yep, I am indeed exaggerating a bit here .oO(maybe ...), but your rule to never use a 4/4 creates all sorts of problems and it certainly complicates things unnecessarily.

I wouldn't be too strict in that regard, really, it'll only hurt the compo. Let common sense decide and not count a bar or two that *may* contain hints of a straight time signature somewhere.

Just my 2 cents :) That being said, looking forward to the entries, thanks for your effort, Karmic!

User Comment
Submitted by Karmic on 25 January 2016
tlr: I don't really care how many time signatures you use in a tune, as long as you never use 3/4 or 4/4.

User Comment
Submitted by DRAX on 25 January 2016
GH: 7/8 - can be quite funky... :D

User Comment
Submitted by tlr on 25 January 2016
Does it have to be the same time signature throughout the song?

If not, can it be 4/4 or 3/4 for a few bars here and there as long as the major part isn't?

User Comment
Submitted by Stinsen on 25 January 2016
Why am I not surprised to see Linus liking this? Anyway, a theme as nice as any for a compo I guess. :D

User Comment
Submitted by GH on 24 January 2016
If I can find the time I will drop a 7/8 ;)

User Comment
Submitted by Karmic on 24 January 2016
Pex: Yep, fine with me.

User Comment
Submitted by Pex Mahoney Tufvesson on 24 January 2016
Is a 6/8 time signature ok to use? I guess that's the "most common" non-standard time signature there is, and I guess it's pleasant to listen to even with untrained ears :)

The main concept of this compo is, of course, to make a tune using a nonstandard time signature!
You have until February 23 to compose your tune. After that period, I’ll release the votesheet and you’ll have until March 1 to vote.

Rules:
- Tunes may not use a 4/4 or 3/4 time signature.
- Tunes must be at least 2 minutes long in PAL speed.
- Composers can submit a maximum of 3 tunes.
- No covers.

If you have any questions, feel free to ask.
