At the Xenium'23 I was asked how it's done.
Drawing characters in the screen memory depends on Y pos delta between two neighbouring characters of the DYCP. If int(delta/8) is equal to 0, two screen characters are used (one under the other) - like in regular 40 column fullheight DYCP. If int(delta/8) is -1 or 1, three characters are used. It means they are sharing middle character. And when it is equal to 2 or greater, or equal to -2 or lower, four characters are used - it's the worst case scenario about which I wrote earlier in the production notes.
So number of the characters used is related to the frequency and amplitude of trajectory.
