They are a good band and I listen to their music for years, but deduced from their lyrics the guys are whacky nutjobs. Doesn't matter... musicians don't need to be smart.

It doesn't really matter whether you like their music or not (I'm more fond of their non-C64 tracks): you can't deny they are real C64 users doing their thing since before 8 bit became trendy and the posers started appearing. All power to W:E.

I think Welle: Erdball is truly amazing. Wether you like em or not, they are the only ones whom ever were able to bring c64 styled music to more masses then anyone else.

I work in the music business (i am a booking agent in NL) and it is truly funny to see them working with the biggest names (Mojo Concerts) in the country. They are represented here in NL by the same guy that works with Queens Of The Stoneage, Alice in Chains and Metalica :).

Here's my review of a concert of Welle:Erdball:

I've been to a very special concert yesterday evening, the band Welle:Erdball was playing
live on stage in my city. I hadn't heard to much of them until now, knowing that they make
quite heavy use of the SID in their music and that they produced the awesome soundtrack to
the upcoming SCPU game Metal Dust by Protovision. But apart from that I had no real
expectiations from the upcoming concert.
I entered the hall at around ten p.m. and about half of the people were dressed in this
dark gothic style and had this weird hairstyles along with pale faces and dark-painted
eyes. I felt a little estranged as this is usually not the scene I hang out with. Not that
I have any false prejudices, everyone should clothe and behave as he prefers.

Then at around half past eleven the show started. The lead-singer was holding something
behind his back, said solemnly something like "Good evening, ladies'n'gentlemen! We're
still living in the year 2002, but 20 years ago there was a fabulous little computer born
who still influences our musical style in a great way, and not only we but many people all
over the world still enjoy using it..." - and now he slowly took what he was hiding behind
his back to the front, presenting an original breadbox C64 to the audience. And with a
loud voice with lots of echo he shouted: "...clap your hands for the C64!!!". The crowd
was cheering like crazy while he showed the breadbox around like if he was presenting an
olympic gold-medal to the audience.
Then they started playing. The singer announced a few songs now and then with phrases like
"The next song is coming 100% out of the C64!" or "Feel the power of the C64!".
Then there was this little merchandising table where they sold CDs, T-Shirts and - you
won't believe it - original 5.25" disks with their Basic demo "Demonstration 1" that came
3rd on Willow 2001. It had real nicely designed and high-quality printed label on it and
was available for 2,50 Euro. I thought I can't trust my eyes when I saw these disks lying
on the table! A lot of people took them into their hands, and especially the younger ones
seemed quite amused about "these strange thingies". ;-)

Summary: Great stage-show, everything very futuristic, with two 60s styled
background-vocal-girls wearing pink hoolahoop dresses with those fancy 50s-60s sunglasses
you know out of the Rock Hudson and Doris Day movies. On the other hand the two frontmen
of the band behaved like robots, wearing black suits and black gloves and black glasses
that nearly made them look like the guys from Men In Black (the movie).
The music sounds like Ramstein but with the heavy guitars replaced by a C64; being forced
to categorize it I would say it comes closest to Dark Wave, with a faint resemblance to
Depeche Mode, but much darker.
All in all it was a great evening, even if I was a little annoyed by the dark athmosphere
of the music after an hour - it's just not my favourite kind of music.
But I would visit a concert of them at any time again - and I would strongly advise you
all to do the same, should they give a gig in city near you. You won't regret it.

Best regards,
Stephan
