There's a brief high-pitched tone every now and then, that I suspect was supposed to be white noise.

Sure! I guess, my tunes consist 90% of sync/ring (on all channels preferably) and 10% of actual notes :)

I guess Celtic has more musical notes but we have much in common anyway. I really like his SIDs because of the energy.
