Probably it worked somehow, but the purple border at start (instead of black) indicates that even then the dirty $a4 values were unpacked instead of $00 values.
Another indication it's fucked up it's that there is no $00 to end the scroll text but $a4 blocks at $0d00 so it will continue getting garbage chars until a $00 is read from $0fff.

I was able to start it back then, probably it was working on an older version of VICE that I was using.

Probably yes, corrupted/bad dump. Even after unpacking with UNP64 there seems to be serie of wrong $a4 values immediately at $0801, at $0b1b, $0d00, which should be if anything zeroes, but most importantly where the tune gets inited
084C A9 A4 LDA #$A4
084E 20 00 10 JSR $1000
which leads the player to get initialized so wrong it will get stuck reading wrong data.
Patching in memory the LDA #$a4 with LDA #$00 makes the program work.
There must be even a single wrong byte in the crunched data causing the wrong value being written instead of a zero.
In VICE monitor, when the intro is hung:
r a=0
g 1000
