It seems that the petcat currently included in vice does not convert '£' to a petscii '£'. '\' is can be used as '£' though (it's the same value). Be careful if you are recompiling from the sources.

Took a while to figure out but you may want to change this in the Makefile:
UTF8HACK := sed -e "s,\o302\o243,\o243,"
into this:
UTF8HACK := sed -e "s,\o302\o243,\o243,g"
otherwise more than one pound sign on a line wont work correctly, e.g basic line 9130 in bbs.bas.
