The cart release has to be recoded to work without the cart and I heard the same about differences as Groepaz mentioned

IIRC the tape version had some code optimizations which made it suitable to run without cartridge. No visible or audible changes were made to the game.

First Release was Jars' Revenge [tape] +2D on 22 April 2012. Timeframe for NTSC points is 1 year, which has passed just a few years ago. ;)
