@Monte Carlos: technically, it's 4 sprites under the FLI-Bug, one of which is MC (that "magic colour" given by the opcode following the $d011-write does not exist in Hiresmode). The code between the "quarter charlines" cares for the colour updates and sprite pointer updates.
@mankeli: now I got unsure who did it, so I just checked the notefile of the all-time-no.1-Demo EOD. Seems it was HCL who coded the HCB-mode and Dane who invested time to pixel the pictures. | User Comment Submitted by mankeli on 4 October 2021
I thought HCB was Dane's? | User Comment Submitted by Monte Carlos on 4 October 2021
I see. The FLI Bug is covered by a mc sprite and 2 hires sprites and additionally using the colors from the opcode after the sta d011. The rest is like AFLI every second line. | User Comment Submitted by chatGPZ on 29 September 2021
Monte Carlos: as Copyfault said, the big advantage of this mode is that it can be very easily explained - "320x200, two of 16 colors per 8x2 block". That makes it much easier to pixel for, especially for newcomers who are not familiar with all the technical details. NUFLI on the other hand is hard to explain correctly even for those who ARE familiar with the details, let alone pixel in that mode (which is why almost all pictures are being converted "best fit" from "no restrictions" sources) | User Comment Submitted by Copyfault on 29 September 2021
@Monte: similar but not the same! UFLI has a hires sprite layer under the complete bitmap. QCH has sprites in the FLI-bug-area only - the "new" thing is that the sprite colours are set in a way that the 8x2-tile-structure is ensured over the full 320x200 pixels.
This was mainly done to "embrace" new graphicians coming from other scenes like the Pixel scene, since its restrictions can by far be better transported than e.g. those of NUFLI (which offers more possibilites in most aspects).
And somehow I think it's funny to think of this QCH-thing as a Hires-version of HCL's HCB-mode - but here with full FLI-bug-coverage, which the Multicolor-version does not (yet?) offer ;) | User Comment Submitted by Monte Carlos on 28 September 2021
Isn't UFLI of the same cellsize with additional sprites? | User Comment Submitted by Copyfault on 26 September 2021
@Joe: concerning Vice, I think you need a later version that supports correct handling of some of the illegal opcodes. | User Comment Submitted by PAL on 26 September 2021
it work on my commodore64! Lovely production! | User Comment Submitted by Joe on 25 September 2021
Beautiful images. Will be interesting to know what is new here!
Regardless: Colorful hires images! Doesn't work on VICE 3.1 though! What's with all these faulties? I thought VICE was stable back at 2.4? |
