Interesting, sounds a lot like my implementation of LZSS - near RLE speed when unpacking, but handles patterns as well for better compression. Which reminds me that I need to play a bit with it some day to see how much is gained from a larger compression window...

Yes, there was already a 35 track version, but that was just a quick hack that needed 2 disksides, and didnt even ask the user to turn the disk..

LZWVL is a simple cruncher, built for speed only. It's a lot better than RLE-kind of packers, and worse than byteboozer or levelcrusher. But it's almost as fast in depack speed as a RLE packer.. It just sits at a different point in the compromise between depack speed and compression ratio, which gives you more options and choice :)

BTW, you didnt see the distortion before, because you don't have a coder's eye ;)

rambones >> afaik every stretcher has this 'bug'. it's just simplification of calculations identical with sound stretching in older audio software - you could easily hear this 'stammering'. here, the checkerboard is used as a texture thus it's yet more noticeable.

WVL said on IRC that he just sent out the 35 track as a private beta to a few folks.

The screenshot is not buggy, it's from when it stretches.

Less compression but I think is faster in decompression =)
Actually all the demo data could be heavily compressed with exomizer and would fit <640blocks, probably it's too slow in decompression.

So... how does LZWVL compare to Exomizer? Faster? Harder? Scooter?
